Pumpkin Solar System Science Project

What do you get when you combine pumpkins and planets? A Pumpkin Solar System, of course! This hands-on science activity is the perfect fall twist on learning about outer space. Inspired by a pumpkin with a paper ring around it (hello, Saturn!), this project brought out tons of creativity and excitement from my kids—and it’s easy to recreate at home or in the classroom.
How to Make a Pumpkin Solar System
Materials You’ll Need:
- 1 large pumpkin (for the Sun)
- 8–10 mini pumpkins (for planets)
- Paint (acrylic works best)
- Paintbrushes
- Book about the solar systemÂ
- Chalk (optional, for outdoor assembly)
- Cardstock or paper (for Saturn’s rings)
Steps:
- Use a book like Me and My Place in Space to look at photos of the planets.
- Paint each mini pumpkin to resemble a different planet. Let kids swirl colors and get creative!
- Use the large pumpkin as the Sun and paint it bright yellow or orange.
- For Saturn, cut a ring from cardstock and place it around the painted pumpkin.
- Once dry, use chalk to draw a solar system layout outside, or arrange the pumpkins indoors in order from the Sun.
Why This Project Is So Educational
This activity combines science, art, and play:
- Science: Learn about the planets and the structure of the solar system.
- Art: Practice color mixing and creative painting.
- Math & Spatial Reasoning: Discuss scale, order, and spatial layout.
- Hands-on Learning: Kids absorb more when they’re involved in building and creating.
It’s a fantastic multi-sensory STEM project that can be adapted for many ages.
We used sections of our patio to space them out, and the kids helped draw the orbits. Despite some paint peeling from wind, it turned out beautifully—and the process was just as fun as the final result!
We all loved how it turned out and had so much fun creating this pumpkin solar system with me!
