Letter of the week- Letter z

Letter Z Theme Ideas for Preschool

There aren’t as many common Z words, but that makes the challenge even more exciting! Here are some great Letter Z words to build your Z week around:

Zebra, Zoo, Zero, Zoom, Zigzag, Zipper, Zinnia, Zucchini

Z is a great letter to use for animal themes, motion and speed, or even early math (with zero!). Try a zebra-striped art project, zipper practice station, or zigzag obstacle course.

Tips for Teaching the Letter Z

Teaching the letter Z is a great chance to review and celebrate all that your preschoolers have learned. Focus on:

  • Phonics sound: Emphasize the /z/ sound using words like zoo, zip, and zebra.

  • Sound location: Help kids identify Z at the beginning (zebra) and end (buzz) of words.

  • Fine motor: Trace and write zigzag lines to prepare for letter Z writing.

  • Multi-sensory play: Try sand writing or use zipper pouches in sensory bins.

  • Movement-based learning: “Zoom like a zebra” or walk along a zigzag tape path!
