You don’t have to travel to the mountains to enjoy a camping adventure with your kids. Some of our favorite family memories have actually come from camping right in our own backyard.

Backyard camping is one of the easiest and most fun summer activities for kids. There’s very little planning involved, kids still get the excitement of sleeping in a tent, and parents have the comfort of knowing the house is only a few steps away.

If you’ve never tried it before, backyard camping is a wonderful way to introduce kids to the fun of camping without the stress of packing for a full trip.

Why Backyard Camping Is So Great for Kids

Kids love backyard camping because it feels like a real adventure. Even though they are only a few steps from home, the experience still feels new and exciting.

Parents love it because:

  • there is almost no preparation
  • you don’t have to pack the car
  • bathroom and snacks are close by
  • younger kids feel more comfortable
  • you don’t have to reserve a campground
  • you can still sleep in the comfort of your own home if you want!

A backyard camping trip also a great way to practice camping skills and sleep in the great outdoors before taking a real camping trip.

How to Set Up Backyard Camping

Setting up your backyard campsite can be very simple. All you really need is:

• a tent
• sleeping bags or blankets
• pillows
• flashlights or lanterns

If you don’t have a tent, you can even build one using a tarp or even blankets and chairs.

Backyard Camping Activities for Kids

Once your campsite is ready, the fun begins! These activities help turn your backyard into a true mini camping adventure.

1. Flashlight Tag

Flashlight tag is a classic nighttime camping game.

Give everyone a flashlight and play tag in the dark. Kids love running around the yard and the flashlights add an extra level of excitement.

2. Stargazing

Backyard camping is the perfect time to look up at the night sky. Lay on a blanket and see if you can spot:

• constellations
• satellites
• the moon
• shooting stars

You can use a simple star chart or a stargazing app to help identify what you’re seeing.

3. Campfire Stories

Even if you don’t have a fire pit, you can still enjoy storytelling.

Kids love:

• silly stories
• spooky stories
• stories where everyone adds a sentence

You can also read a favorite book together by flashlight.

4. Backyard Scavenger Hunt

Create a simple nature scavenger hunt.

Kids can search for things like:

• a smooth rock
• something that moves in the wind
• a leaf
• something that smells nice
• an insect

Exploring nature is often the most exciting part of camping.

5. Listen to Nighttime Nature

Have kids sit quietly and listen for sounds around them. What can they hear?

• crickets
• frogs
• wind in the trees
• birds
• rustling leaves

This simple activity helps kids notice nature in a new way.

6. Campfire Songs

Sing some classic campfire songs together. Some favorites include:

• Down by the Bay
• The Ants Go Marching
• She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain

Singing together adds to the fun camping atmosphere.

7. Roast Marshmallows

No camping night is complete without marshmallows. If you don’t have a fire pit you can make s’mores in the oven, on a grill or over a candle! Try solar s’mores if the sun has not yet set. Kids still love the experience.

8. Outdoor Movie Night

Project a movie onto the side of your house or a sheet you hang up. This makes the night feel extra special! We have an inflatable outdoor move screen that we love to use and invite the neighborhood kids.

Try a Trampoline Campout

One of our kids’ favorite backyard camping traditions has been trampoline sleepovers. If you have a trampoline in your yard, it makes a surprisingly cozy and fun place to sleep outside. I did this as a kid, too!

Just add:

  • sleeping bags or blankets

  • a few pillows

  • a flashlight or lantern

The trampoline keeps everyone off the ground and turns into a giant outdoor bed. Kids love lying there looking up at the stars while listening to nighttime sounds.

You can make it even more fun by:

  • telling stories

  • watching for shooting stars

  • playing quiet flashlight games

  • listening for crickets or owls

If the weather is warm and calm, a trampoline campout can become one of those simple summer memories kids never forget.

Backyard Camping Science Fun

Backyard camping is also a great opportunity for kids to explore nature and science.

Try activities like:

• observing insects at night
• watching moths around outdoor lights
• learning about nocturnal animals
• tracking the moon phases
• exploring shadows with flashlights

Kids naturally start asking questions when they spend time outside.

Backyard Camping Snack Ideas

Simple camping snacks make the evening feel even more special.

Some easy options include:

• s’mores
• popcorn
• trail mix
• fruit
• hot dogs or veggie dogs

You could even pack a small cooler and enjoy a camp-style picnic dinner.

Practice Camping Skills

Backyard camping is a perfect opportunity for kids to learn basic outdoor skills before going on a full camping trip.

Kids can practice:

• setting up a tent
• organizing camping gear
• learning flashlight and/or fire safety
• cooking simple foods outdoors

  • Bring extra blankets if it gets chilly
  • Use bug spray if needed
  • Keep water & snacks nearby
  • Have a night light to help them feel safe- we love these solar lanterns!
  • Let kids help plan the activities

Most importantly, keep it relaxed and fun. It’s is about enjoying time together.

Why Kids Love a Backyard Camping Adventure
