Left-Handed School Supplies for Kids

Do you have a lefty in your family?  My oldest child is left-handed. Being left-handed can cause some surprising challenges that I never thought about before!  We have been researching left-handed school supplies for kids this week to help him out a bit. Why not make it easier for him in this right-handed world?!

Left-Handed School Supplies for Kids

Left-Handed Pens:

When I asked him the hardest parts about being left-handed, he always mentions writing, (and shaking hands.)  He has horrible handwriting and I think it might be due to the fact that he can’t really see what he is writing. Plus his hand smears it as he goes across. I never knew it until this week, but there are left-handed pens!  They are curved so the lefty can see what he is writing!  I am ordering some right away for our school year!

Left-Handed Scissors:

Another big challenge is cutting. We have some great left-handed scissors. These have made cutting much easier for my left-handed man!  They make them for big people and for little hands, too! What makes them different than regular scissors?  They are reversed from regular scissors. The finger holes are reversed and the blades are, too! Reversing it gives the left-handed kids a clear vision of what they are cutting. When a lefty used right-handed scissors, they have to put their hand in an unnatural position and it can give them callouses. Also, they can’t see what they are cutting as well.

Left-Handed Notebooks:

Notebooks can be flipped backwards or you can get the ones with the spirals on top, that’s what we usually do, but did you know they make left-handed spiral notebooks?  Writing with the spirals on your arm can be very awkward and uncomfortable.

Pencil Grips for Left-Handed Kids

We used pencil grips a lot when my son was younger to help him learn to hold his pencil the right way. I wrote a post on them a while back. They have some for left-handed kids that work great!

Left Handed Rulers

I had no idea these existed, or that this was a challenge for lefties. Honestly I never thought about it!  My easy right-handed world has never made me even wonder. So, these left-handed rulers are just backwards. It makes complete sense that this would be easier for them!

Left Handed Computer Mouse

This also was a new concept to me. It makes sense that a mouse would be a challenge to use for  someone who is left handed, especially the curved ones that are meant for the right hand!  When I try to use a computer mouse with my left hand, I feel so incapable!  A left-handed mouse is set up opposite with the buttons.

Left Handed Can Opener

Ok, this is a bit of a stretch in terms of school supplies, but what a great idea to have a can opener made specifically for left-handed people!

  1. Thank you for this article!! I’m going to get that can opener and left-handed pens straight away! We already have our daughter’s mouse set up for a left handed person. We used a free program that switches the buttons around on the mouse! It’s perfect and much cheaper than purchasing a specialized mouse (Anything *specialized* is always more!).

I also really enjoyed noting (get the pun) the note books! I *never* thought about her putting them backwards so she doesn’t have to work over top the spiral! Silly me! We’re going to implement that straight away!!

I am wondering if you have had any success in finding left-handed pencils so they can see while writing? Either retractable or not. My daughter is nine, so she doesn’t need the super fat starter out kind, which is what I keep seeing.

Wonderful article! Thank you so much, you’ve helped us quite a bit. 🙂

  2. I absolutely adore my left-handed scissors, and couldn’t survive w/o them.

I survived w/o left-handed spirals by writing in all of them backwards, which confused people.
And I’ve been wanting a left-handed can opener, and a measuring cup. I so want a left-handed measuring cup.

  3. I cannot believe that these companies are profiting on products fir left handed people?? There is absolutely no difference than fir right handed people and to say ” the challenges ” for left handed people , excuse me but i’m not quite sure what challenges there are to being left handed as apposed to right handed. I think things are becoming a bit ridiculous. This coming from a left handed person .

  4. SO angry that these cost so much more than regular ones. Surely it doesn’t cost that much more to make a left side spiral notebook than a right side one. $6.89??? Regular ones are everywhere for $1 or less.
    Grrr!!!
