This week we have been making ornaments, and not your typical ones. My kids and I painted a set of solar system Christmas ornaments this week. This is a cool way to incorporate some science into your holiday crafting! These ornaments are so fun and could actually be used all year round on a mobile or for teaching.
This set of solar system ornaments was inspired by the book There’s No Place Like Space: All About Our Solar System (Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library) by Tish Rabe. I am participating in the 10 Days of Kid-Made Christmas series hosted by Mama Miss. Stop by the landing page for this series to see what all of the other participants are sharing! This also goes right along with this week’s Weekly Virtual Book Club for Kids. The theme this month is ornaments and the book of the week is Merry Christmas Mouse.
How to Make the Solar System Christmas Ornaments
For our ornaments we used round plastic ball ornaments. I found a set online that had 3 different sizes so we could make our planets different sizes, but you could do it with the ones that are all the same size, too.
I printed a little solar system diagram for my kids to use as a guide. Or, if you have a book with the solar system in it, pull that out for them to look at the different planets. Next, paint the inside of the balls to match the look of the different planets. Acrylic paint would work best for this.
Now, I know that Pluto is technically no longer a planet, but we still love Pluto, so it makes the cut at our house!
Once the paint is dry, close the balls up and tie a string through the hole at the top for hanging. We used some colored baker’s twine.
Then they are ready to hang on the tree!
