I passionately love music. I have studied music all of my life and even minored in it in college. When I started homeschooling my kids one of the things I always wanted to do was to teach them about the classics- including music appreciation, art and literature. I have been homeschooling for 5 years now and have been searching for the perfect way to teach music history to my kids. Until coming across Zeezok’s Music Appreciation curriculum, I didn’t think I would ever find anything I liked. I was so excited when I stumbled upon this curriculum set because it looked just like what I had been looking for.
(I received this curriculum set for free in exchange for a review.)
About Zeezok’s Music Appreciation Curriculum:
Zeezok’s Music Appreciation curriculum is for Elementary grades (K-6) and teaches kids about seven different composers: Bach, Hayden, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, and Schubert. It comes with a set of biographies on the life of each composer called the Great Musician Series. Also included is an activity book, a 5- CD music set, and a disc with lap books for studying each composer.
I have to say that the biographies are my absolute favorite part of the curriculum. They are central to the whole program. I love to teach my kids with great literature, and these books are GREAT! My kids love as I read to them the stories of these great composers. The books are full of fun stories, pictures, music samples, and even musical terms to teach kids about the lives of each composer. The stories in the book are all true and told in such a fun way that it leaves kids hungering for more!
Throughout the books they refer to pieces of music that they composed and then tell you where to listen to them on the Music CD’s that come with the curriculum. My kids and I really enjoyed this feature. As we read about Bach and when he wrote a particular minuet, we could go listen to that song right away! It really helped us learn more about him and his music.
The accompanying activity book is a resource you would not want to do without. It gives a teaching outline for each composer with additional details to use in teaching your kids. It is a thick (350 page) paperback full color workbook. It teaches on topics including geography, history, instruments, recipes, musical terms, culture, character traits, and more. There are lots of fun activities for cutting and pasting, writing, and reading comprehension including elements of study across various subject areas. It is not a dry workbook style book either, it is engaging and colorful and adds so much more to help you study the musicians.
If you have learners that like lap books, you will love the included lap book set! It comes on a disc with files full of printable full color lap book parts, instructions and pictures showing you how to assemble them. I have one child who ADORES lapbooks. She loves the cutting, pasting and assembling. Lapbooks teach her and reinforce the topics we are learning from the books in such a hands-on way! This lapbook is 2-sided with a game board on the back side.
We have been so impressed with this curriculum and will be continuing on with it this fall after our summer break. I will also likely purchase the next level after we finish this one. I definitely want to add the rest of the books to our library. Find it and more at Zeezok.com. The full curriculum set sells for $169.99, but you can also buy all of the parts and pieces separately.
