Looking for a meaningful and creative gift your kids can help make? A DIY photo cube puzzle is a heartfelt, hands-on project that turns a favorite photo into a personalized keepsake. Whether it’s for Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, a birthday, or a holiday, this fun craft is both thoughtful and engaging—plus it makes a great desk display or playroom puzzle!

What Is a Photo Cube Puzzle?
A photo cube puzzle is made from wooden blocks arranged in a square. A photo is cut and adhered to the blocks so it can be reassembled like a mini puzzle. Kids love creating them, and the result is a charming 3D photo that can sit on a shelf or be taken apart and reassembled like a brain teaser.
Supplies Needed
-
Six 2-inch wooden cubes (found at most craft stores)
-
Acrylic paint (optional – for colorful sides or background)
-
A 5×7 photo (or resize a favorite digital picture)
-
Double-sided tape or glue stick
-
Wood glue or Mod Podge (to secure and seal)
-
Razor blade or craft knife
-
Letter stickers (optional—for adding names or words)
-
Rubber band (to keep blocks aligned while working)
How to Make a DIY Photo Cube Gift
1. Paint the Blocks (Optional)
Let kids paint each side of the wooden cubes if you’d like a pop of color or want to match a theme. Choose two or three complementary colors for a fun patchwork effect. Let dry completely.

2. Align the Cubes
Arrange the six blocks into a rectangle (2 rows of 3) and secure them together with a rubber band to keep everything aligned. You can also temporarily tape them to a surface to prevent shifting.
3. Trim and Attach the Photo
Trim your 5×7 photo slightly to fit across all six cubes. Gently press the photo down onto the cube surface with double-sided tape or a glue stick.

4. Cut the Photo
Using a sharp razor blade or craft knife, carefully slice the photo between the blocks—both horizontally and vertically—to create six square segments. Take your time to ensure straight lines.

5. Glue Down the Photo Pieces
Apply wood glue or Mod Podge to each individual cube and reattach the matching piece of photo. Press down and smooth gently. Allow to dry fully.
6. Seal the Surface
Once dry, apply a coat of Mod Podge or another sealant over the entire photo surface to protect it and add durability. Let it cure according to product instructions.

7. Personalize It
For a fun final touch, add letter stickers—such as spelling “Dad,” “Mom,” or a child’s name—on the sides of the blocks.
