Counting and math skills start as early as children begin learning speaking and vocabulary. Today I want to share some toddler and preschool math activities with you to help you enhance your young child’s learning experience.

Preschool Math Activities

Math is more than just addition and subtraction and solving formulas. Early math skills include sorting activities, number recognition, patterns and shapes activities. There are so many fun activities you can do with your toddlers and preschool aged kids!

If you have never stopped by the website ZERO TO THREE, you need to take a moment to visit it. I have had so much fun exploring the different parenting topics on there. I particularly love the early learning ideas. Of course, that is what I would be drawn to! There are fabulous ideas for early literacy and ideas for early math and science learning from babies to toddlers to preschoolers. Teaching this age is my favorite! It is all about play. They are so curious, so eager to learn new things and so ready to spend time with their parents. In fact, the first thousand days are the most critical period for brain development that build the foundation for all future learning!  Make the most of it.

Sometimes this age can be challenging, though. Those of you with kids in this age range definitely know what I am talking about. It takes a lot of patience for mess and mistakes to teach these little cuties.   Pushing through those hard days makes the good days ALL that much sweeter!

But that’s not all, there are articles and videos full of ideas for all aspects of parenting kids in this age range.  I was really inspired by so many things on the site. You can even input your own stories for the website to share!

On the ZERO TO THREE site they recommend a couple of books that I am excited to check out and use for ideas in our home. All are by Kathy Charner & look like amazing resources. These are just a few in the series.

I was inspired by the website to create some counting activities for my daughter. I have been working on a preschool learning series on my site this year and I thought it would be so much fun to incorporate a similar set of learning activities for numbers. I made some number recognition activities as well as some counting activities.

My daughter was thrilled with these activities and I love having those special learning moments with her. We played with them using buttons.  I also think it could be a lot of fun to do it with play dough if you laminated them first.

What I love most about the ZERO TO THREE is that they are helping parents through the real struggles of parenting. We all know how hard it is to be a parent. We all want to do it well, but need help, advice or inspiration at times. This website focuses on the positive moments and encourages parents in so many ways!
