3 Ingredient Homemade Pixie Sticks with Real Fruit!

If your kids love Pixy Stix (yes, that’s the official spelling!), you’re not alone. These sweet-and-sour powdered candies are a nostalgic favorite—but they’re also packed with artificial colors and flavors.
So we set out to make a healthier homemade pixie stick recipe—using just three real-food ingredients!
This DIY version is easy, fun to make with kids, and perfect for parties, gifts, or just a unique special treat.

Why Make Homemade Pixie Sticks?
Store-bought Pixy Stix contain a long list of artificial ingredients:
Original Pixy Stix ingredients:
Dextrose, Citric Acid, Artificial Flavors, Carmine, Blue 1, Blue 2, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6 (and all their “Lake” forms)
That’s a lot of food dye for something so small.
In our homemade version, we keep it simple with:
-
Freeze-dried fruit for color and natural flavor
-
Citric acid for the classic sour kick
-
A granulated sweetener (like organic sugar or coconut sugar)
Ingredients You’ll Need
-
Freeze-dried fruit (we used strawberries, but any kind works!)
-
Citric acid (adds tang and fizz)
-
Sugar (organic cane sugar, coconut sugar, or monk fruit if you want low-sugar)
-
Paper straws (found ours at the dollar store—bonus points if they’re colorful!)
Tip: Try combinations like raspberry + blueberry, or pineapple + mango for tropical flavors.

How to Make Healthy Pixie Sticks
Step 1: Blend the Powder
Add equal parts freeze-dried fruit, citric acid, and sugar to a food processor, high-speed blender, or coffee grinder. Blend until it becomes a fine, airy powder.
Adjust the sour level by adding more or less citric acid to taste.

Step 2: Prep Your Straws
Use paper straws to replicate the classic look. Fold over the bottom and secure with a small piece of tape to seal.
If using plastic smoothie straws, you can heat-seal one end with an iron or lighter—but paper is easier and biodegradable.

Step 3: Fill the Straws
Filling the straws takes a little patience. We tried a paper funnel, but it clogged easily. What worked best?
-
Use a small spoon
-
Tap the straw on the table to help settle the powder
-
Recruit your kids to help! (They won’t complain…)
Seal the top of the straw with tape or fold it over like the bottom.
Notes & Storage
-
Clumping? Since real fruit contains some natural sugar and moisture, these may harden slightly over time. Just peel open and enjoy!
-
Shelf Life: Store in an airtight container or sealed bag for up to 1–2 weeks.
-
Flavor Variations: Freeze-dried raspberry, blueberry, peach, pineapple, or apple are all great options.
