Welcome back to our Letter of the Week preschool series! Today we’re learning all about the letter Q—one of the trickier letters to teach, but also one of the most fun. From queens and quilts to quills and quacking ducks, there are lots of engaging ways to bring this unique letter to life in your preschool lesson plans.

Preschool Letter Q Theme Ideas
There may be fewer Q words than other letters, but here are some great Letter Q theme ideas to build your week around:
Queen, Quilt, Quail, Quack, Quiet, Quick, Quill, Quest, Quarter, (Don’t) Quit
Tip: Combine this letter with a fairytale theme for queens and quests, or pair it with a history unit on colonial times using quills!
These themes work wonderfully across multiple subjects including science, storytelling, and even early economics when you explore “quarter” or “quiet” zones.

Teaching the Letter Q: Sounds and Recognition Tips
The letter Q is always followed by the letter U, making its sound “/kw/”—as in queen, quilt, or quack.
Here’s how to reinforce it:
-
Teach the phrase “Q and U stick like glue!”
-
Use auditory and visual recognition games (“Quick! Point to the letter Q!”)
-
Compare Q with O in handwriting practice to help with letter formation
-
Practice uppercase and lowercase distinctions—especially since lowercase q often gets reversed with p
Make it multisensory by writing Q in shaving cream or building it with modeling clay.

Preschool Letter Q Craft: Q is for Quill
This week’s craft is both creative and historical! A quill is a feather pen that was once used for writing long before pencils and ballpoint pens.

We gathered real feathers (from wild turkeys near our home!) and used India ink to turn them into actual writing tools. You can also purchase feathers for crafting if you don’t have them naturally nearby.
To Make the Quill Craft:
-
Cut the end of the feather at a slant and clean out the shaft.
-
Dip the tip into ink and write with it on your printable Q template.
-
Decorate the letter Q with a drawn or cut-out quill (provided in the printable pack).
Safety Tip: India ink stains. Be sure to supervise and protect surfaces during use.
This craft makes a great springboard for a short discussion on early American history or how writing tools have evolved.

Preschool Letter Q Snack: Q is for Quilt
Get snacky with this fun Q is for Quilt edible art project! Using a printable grid (included in your download), kids can design a cereal “quilt” using small finger foods:

Create patterns across the quilt, sort by shape or color, and enjoy a treat afterward. It’s part snack, part sensory activity!

Favorite Letter Q Moment This Week
My kids absolutely LOVED writing with real quill pens—and so did I! It sparked a great discussion about history, the Declaration of Independence, and how people used to write in the past. Plus, the cereal quilt snack brought lots of giggles and creativity. Simple, meaningful learning at its best!
