Rock ‘N Learn Videos Review: A Fun Way to Teach Sight Words

f you’re looking for a screen-time option that actually teaches something meaningful, Rock ‘N Learn has been a longtime favorite in our home.
I first discovered their videos years ago, and my kids immediately loved them. What surprised me most? They kept askingto watch them again—which doesn’t always happen with educational content.
Today I’m sharing an updated look at their Sight Words Level 1 program and whether it’s still worth using with kids.
Rock ‘N Learn creates educational videos for kids covering a wide range of subjects, including:
- Phonics & reading
- Sight words
- Math skills
- Science topics
- Social studies
- Foreign languages
Their approach is simple but effective: teach through music, repetition, and visuals.
As a homeschool parent, I’ve always loved using music as a learning tool—songs stick in a way worksheets just don’t.
Rock ‘N Learn Sight Words Level 1 Review
The Sight Words Level 1 program focuses on helping kids learn high-frequency words through songs and repetition.
What it teaches:
- Over 60 common sight words
- Includes Dolch pre-primer words and some Fry words
- Words are taught in context, not just memorized
How it works:
- Words appear on screen while being sung
- Kids hear, see, and repeat the words
- Movement and visuals reinforce meaning
- A simple storyline (like a treasure hunt) keeps kids engaged
This multi-sensory approach is exactly what early readers need:
see it + hear it + say it = stronger retention
Why It Works (The Learning Science)
This type of program is effective because it combines:
- Repetition → builds automatic recognition
- Music → improves memory retention
- Visual cues → supports early readers
- Context → helps kids understand meaning, not just memorize
It’s especially helpful for:
- Beginning readers
- Struggling readers
- Kids who resist traditional reading practice
Ages & Format
- Recommended: Pre-K through early elementary
- Length: About 50 minutes
- Format: Originally DVD, now also available digitally
You can often find their videos on platforms like:
- Amazon (purchase or streaming)
- Apple Books (for companion materials)
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Engaging and kid-friendly
- Great for reinforcing sight words
- Music-based (kids remember the songs!)
- Easy, low-prep learning
Cons
- Not a full reading curriculum (best as a supplement)
- Some videos feel a bit dated visually
- Screen-based (so best used intentionally)
How We Use It in Our Homeschool
This works best as a supplement, not the main lesson.
Here’s how we’ve used it:
- Watch together once or twice a week
- Pause and read words off the screen
- Follow up with a quick hands-on activity:
- Sight word flashcards
- Writing practice
- Simple reading games
It’s a great “learning break” activity that still counts as school.
Is Rock ‘N Learn Worth It?
If you want something that:
- Reinforces early reading skills
- Feels fun instead of forced
- Requires zero prep
Then yes—Rock ‘N Learn is still a solid option.
It’s not flashy or trendy—but it’s effective, and that matters more.
Simple Alternatives or Add-Ons
If you’re building this into a lesson, you could pair it with:
- Printable sight word cards
- A sight word scavenger hunt
- Your own printable packs (this is a PERFECT upsell tie-in for you)

The Earth Science kind of interests me. I didn’t know they had science DVDs.
I’m interested in any of the phonics and early reading ones as that is what we are working on right now. 😉 French might be fun too.
We’re going to be doing biology next year, so I’d like to have the Human Body dvd to help bring the material down to Katie’s level.
I’ve never seen this series before and am very interested as a new homeschooler to two elementary age girls.
The Solar System or any of the multiplication ones.
The sight word levels 1-3 is intriguing. I have a special needs child that is very visual and wonder if this would help him grasp the concepts easier, and I’ve only seen phonics videos prior to this.
Thanks for the opportunity!
I would love the addition/subtraction or the multiplication!
I would love all of them for my children. Thank you and great giveaway.
All of them look so awesome! It’s hard to choose just one!
They all sounds wonderful. I think my daughter would greatly benefit from the Phonics 1 dvd right now. Thanks for the chance!
I would pick a sight word one for my kinders class!
We love Rock N Learn, and I’d love to have the Spanish one for my kids. It looks really great!
Any of them would be awesome but the Solar System one looks cool.
