Try these DIY Chalkboard letters for a fun Preschool learning activity!
Preschool is such a magical stage of learning. My daughter is in that sweet spot where she’s obsessed with letters and eager to read like her big siblings. We do a lot of letter learning activities—but this one is a favorite!
These DIY Chalkboard Letters are fun to make and even more fun to use. They offer hands-on practice with letter recognition, writing, and spelling—all while letting kids get creative. Whether you’re a homeschool parent or a preschool teacher, this activity adds a tactile twist to early literacy learning.

How to Make Chalkboard Letters:
-
Prep the Letters:
Lightly sand the tops of the wooden letters if they’re rough. This helps the chalk stick better and makes them easier to erase. Wipe off any dust. -
Paint:
Lay out the letters on a tarp or trash bag outdoors or in a well-ventilated space. Spray each letter with a generous coat of chalkboard paint. Let dry between coats. I applied 4–5 coats to get a good solid finish.Tip: Only paint the front to help kids remember which direction the letters go!
-
Dry Completely:
Let the letters dry fully (no tackiness) before using them. Once dry, they’re ready for chalk!

Once the paint is all dry, and not sticky at all, the letters are ready to be used!

Ways to Use Chalkboard Letters:
-
Decorate the Alphabet: Let your child color in the letters however they like—polka dots, stripes, rainbow designs.
-
Trace & Erase: Write letters or guide lines for your child to trace and then erase.
-
Spelling Practice: Create simple words and have your child trace or rewrite the letters.
-
Name Recognition: Spell your child’s name and decorate it together.
-
ABC Games: Mix them up and ask your child to find letters or put them in order.

A Note on Erasing:
These letters aren’t quite as easy to erase as a standard chalkboard, but they still work well with a little extra rubbing. A damp cloth helps, too!
