Looking for a simple, meaningful way to help your kids connect with nature? This Nature Study Notebooking Journal is a beautiful printable designed to guide kids in observing, recording, and sketching what they discover outdoors.

Whether you’re doing nature study regularly or just getting started, this journal makes it easy to turn everyday moments outside into rich learning experiences.

Why Nature Study Matters

Nature study is one of the most powerful (and simple) ways for kids to learn.

When children spend time outdoors, they naturally begin to:

  • Notice details
  • Ask questions
  • Make connections
  • Slow down and observe

It builds both scientific thinking and a sense of wonder.

Even a short time outside—watching clouds, studying a leaf, or observing insects—can become a meaningful learning moment.

Why We Love Nature Study

My kids love nature study.   We are pretty casual about it, but always try to squeeze it in each week.  Nature is an incredible place to learn science and learn about the world we live in. When kids spend time outdoors they are seeing so many wonders unfold before them. There are a million different things to study.  It is incredibly beneficial for us to take moments to be still and just observe. Use your various senses to explore nature~ look, smell, touch, listen, sometimes even tasting! It is so healthy for us to be in the outdoors breathing in fresh air, letting our feet touch the grass, and getting sunshine.

Keeping a nature journal is so good for kids, too!  They can record what they see, hear, smell, and feel as they experience nature.

Why Use a Nature Journal?

Keeping a nature journal helps kids:

  • Record what they observe
  • Practice drawing and writing
  • Build observation skills
  • Create a keepsake of their learning

One of my favorite things is seeing kids look back through their journals months (or years) later and notice how much they’ve grown.

What Makes This Nature Study Journal Different

While a blank notebook works well, a guided journal like this one gives kids:

  • Ideas for what to observe
  • Structure without being restrictive
  • Prompts that encourage deeper thinking

It helps them go beyond “just drawing” and really engage with what they see.
