Ribbon Spool Speller Toy: Hands-On Spelling

If you’re like me, you probably have a little stash of ribbon tucked away for future craft projects. But what about all those empty ribbon spools once the ribbon is gone?
Instead of tossing them, turn them into a Ribbon Spool Speller Toy — a simple, hands-on learning tool that helps kids practice spelling in a playful and tactile way.
This DIY speller is especially helpful for kids who learn best by seeing and touching rather than just writing words on paper.
Why This Speller Toy Is So Helpful
This activity turns spelling practice into something kids can spin, explore, and play with. That physical interaction makes learning more engaging and memorable.
It helps kids:
-
Strengthen spelling skills in a low-pressure way
-
Build letter recognition
-
Improve fine motor skills
-
Practice reading and word-building
-
Stay focused through hands-on learning
It’s perfect for:
-
Homeschool spelling practice
-
Classroom literacy centers
-
Early readers learning simple words
-
Kids who need movement and interaction to stay engaged
How to Make a Ribbon Spool Speller Toy
This project is simple to put together and can be customized for different ages and skill levels.
Supplies
-
4–5 empty ribbon spools
-
A pencil, dowel, or wooden skewer
-
Paint (optional)
-
Permanent marker or pen
-
Pencil toppers, large erasers, or beads (to hold spools in place)
Step 1: Paint (Optional)
If you’d like to add some color, paint the inside of the ribbon spools (and the outer edges if you want). Let them dry completely before moving on.
Step 2: Add Letters
Using a permanent marker, write letters around the inside rim of each spool. Try to include a mix of:
-
Vowels
-
Common consonants
-
Frequently used letters like S, T, R, N, and L
Wider ribbon spools make this step easier, but narrow ones work too with a little patience.
Step 3: Assemble the Speller
Slide all the spools onto a pencil, dowel, or skewer. Secure both ends using pencil toppers, large erasers, beads, or other stoppers so the spools stay in place but can still spin.
Step 4: Start Spelling!
Kids can spin the spools to line up letters and create words. It’s like a hands-on word-building machine!
You can use it to:
-
Practice weekly spelling words
-
Build simple CVC words (cat, dog, sun)
-
Challenge kids to make as many words as they can
-
Work on word families (-at, -ing, -op, etc.)

Ways to Extend the Learning
Want to take it further? Try these ideas:
-
Timed challenges: How many real words can you make in one minute?
-
Vowel swaps: Keep consonants the same and change vowels to make new words
-
Parts of speech: Build nouns, verbs, or adjectives
-
Silly word game: Mix real and nonsense words for fun
A Fun Alternative to Worksheets
This Ribbon Spool Speller Toy is a wonderful way to make spelling practice feel like a game instead of a chore. Kids stay engaged longer, and the spinning action adds just enough novelty to keep them coming back to it.
Best of all, it’s made from materials you might already have at home.
