Blueprints and Architecture Activity for Kids: Dream House Projects

Looking for a hands-on, creative way to introduce kids to architecture and design? This architecture activity for kids is inspired by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, whose birthday is celebrated in June. It’s the perfect way to blend art, math, history, and STEM concepts into one engaging project.

Who Was Frank Lloyd Wright?
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) is one of America’s most iconic architects, known for designing innovative, nature-inspired structures that blended beautifully with their surroundings. Some of his most famous works include Fallingwater, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Robie House. Wright believed architecture should reflect harmony with the environment—a concept he called organic architecture.
Exploring Wright’s life and designs offers a meaningful way to connect kids to architecture, art, and cultural history. He is a fantastic figure to study as part of your blueprints and architecture activity for kids unit.
Dream House Project: Blueprint & Design for Kids
This activity was inspired by a project I used to teach in my high school interior design class. We created blueprints, designed dream homes, and explored creative design choices like paint colors, textures, and furniture layouts.
Now I’m bringing that same idea into our homeschool with my kids using a printable blueprint set!

What’s Included in the Printable Set
- Several different pre-drawn house blueprints
- Blank individual room templates to create your own custom layout
- Great for elementary to middle school students
You can:
- Design a full home from scratch
- Decorate rooms with drawings, stickers, or magazine cutouts
- Explore architectural layout and spatial thinking

How to Use the Architecture Printables
- Choose between a pre-drawn house or build your own layout with room templates.
- Color and decorate the floorplan.
- Label rooms, add furniture, and make creative design choices.
- Use rulers and graph paper to scale your home if working with older kids.
- Create a 3D model or diorama to extend the learning.
This architecture for kids project is a fantastic blend of math (area, perimeter, geometry) and art (design, drawing, creativity).

My younger son used a pre-made blueprint house template and designed his house that way. My daughter loved creating her own with the individual rooms.
