November Cups and Classics: Cultivating Family Culture Through the Classics

In a world that moves fast, it’s easy to rush past beauty — the kind found in a poem read aloud, a quiet piece of music, or a simple moment of gratitude shared at the table. That’s why I created Cups & Classics — a gentle, month-by-month series of family culture activities that blends art, music, poetry, story, and simple tea-time traditions. It will help families cultivate culture and connection together.

This is something we have done in our homeschool and family life for about 15 years. I decided it was time to put it together to share! It is very close to my heart and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Each month centers on a timeless theme and features one artist, one composer, and one poet — all tied together with thoughtful stories, discussion prompts, and a simple seasonal recipe to enjoy together.
And, of course, a cup of something warm.
Whether you homeschool, gather for family tea time, or simply want to add a touch of meaning and rhythm to your week, this series is for you.
November Cups and Classics: Gratitude & Giving
Our first month’s theme — Gratitude & Giving — invites families to slow down and notice the blessings all around them.
Together, you’ll explore the works of:
-
Artist: Norman Rockwell — capturing the heart of home and the dignity of daily life.
-
Composer: Antonín Dvořák — filling the air with melodies of longing, joy, and hope.
-
Poet: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow — reminding us that beauty lives in the simple and sincere.
| Week | Theme | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Everyday Blessings | Finding wonder in ordinary moments. |
| 2 | Gratitude & Giving | The joy of work and generosity. |
| 3 | Family & Home | Comfort, belonging, and love. |
| 4 | Reflection & Blessing | Rest, peace, and thankfulness before the holidays. |
Each weekly lesson invites you to explore a classic painting, listen to a piece of music, read poetry aloud, and share thoughtful conversation as a family — all while enjoying a cozy recipe like cranberry bread, pumpkin snickerdoodles, or warm apple cider muffins.

Why Family Culture Matters in Today’s World
In uncertain times, more families are turning back to the classics — not out of nostalgia, but because they anchor us.
Culture isn’t something we buy — it’s something we build.
When families make space for beauty, they grow in understanding, empathy, and peace.
This series isn’t just about education — it’s about forming memories that root deeply in the heart. Art, music, and story have a way of reminding us what is true and good, instilling family values.
Cups & Classics helps you bring that beauty home again — gently, simply, and together.
How to Use Cups and Classics to Build Family Culture
You can enjoy each week’s study in whatever rhythm fits your family members — over breakfast, during a quiet afternoon, or as a Sunday tradition.
Gather your family once a week — light a candle, pour some tea or cider, and let art and story draw you closer. All you need is a willing heart, and a little time to slow down.
Each lesson takes about an hour and is suitable for all ages. But, the impact lingers much longer. You’ll find your children begin to notice beauty more often — in music, in kindness, in the world around them.
