Today I am bringing you another fun candy math idea, but this time it is HERSHEY’S Weights and Measures.  I also want to tell you all about the awesome Start School Like a Champion program that is going on right now!

Candy Math - HERSHEY Weights and Measures

Back to School time is coming soon, and so are the Olympic games!!  Since both exciting events are coming soon, the Team USA sponsors Coca-Cola®, Kellogg’s®, HERSHEY’S, and ©/® J.M. Smucker have teamed up with Scholastic to create the “Start School Like a Champion” program that is exclusive to Walmart.  If you buy select products from these sponsors, you can earn free Scholastic books!  Pretty great, right?!  This is a limited time offer that runs from June 29th through September 30th (2016).

I snagged some of these awesome products at my local Walmart and have submitted my receipt through the required website linked HERE.  Notice the FREE BOOK sign next to the Jiff? That’s what you are looking for.  Since we got a lot of the books (You can earn up to 90!), I am planning to give a few of the books to our little local library. If these are products you are already purchasing, it is a wonderful way to give back to someone or someplace that needs books! 1 item = 1 book

It is SO simple to submit!  You just take a picture of your receipt and upload it to the website.

Here are just a few of the things we purchased for this project.

Now, I wanted to spotlight one of these products in a fun way.  I have been wanting to continue my candy math series with the book HERSHEY Weights and Measures by Jerry Pallotta. This just happens to be a Scholastic Book, too! 🙂

HERSHEY Math

The book talks about inches and yards and feet. It discusses the metric system, what a ton is and more types of measurements- including liquid measurements. It is a GREAT way to introduce the concepts.

We did a few different things with our yummy HERSHEYS treats as we read the book together!  We lined them up to measure them.

Hershey measurements

It turns out the HERSHEY’S Miniatures are exactly an inch wide.

HERSHEY’S KISSES are a bit smaller.

We also used our balance to weigh them and see which was heavier.  Then we compared the different types of HERSHEY’S Miniatures. They were all pretty equal.

This got my kids going to see all different kinds of things and see what weighs more. It’s a great discovery activity. Check out the book HERSHEY’S Weights and Measures!  It is a really fun one for teaching all kinds of measurements and weights. Your kids will love it if you involve candy in their math lesson!

Plus, Chocolate. Enough said.

So guys, let’s start school like a champion!  Earn a free Scholastic book by purchasing participating Coca-Cola, HERSHEY’S, Kellogg’s, or J.M. Smucker’s products at Walmart between 6/29/16 – 9/30/16 (1 item = 1 book). OR earn a bunch of free books by stocking up and pay it forward!
