It’s simple to make, fun to decorate, and creates a burst of red, white, and blue confetti with every launch. Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue, a homeschool history day, or a Fourth of July craft session, this activity is sure to bring smiles and festive flair. These would also be fun for a birthday, or any celebration! Just change the decorations to fit the occasion.Â

Supplies Needed
-
Empty toilet paper roll (or paper towel tube cut in half)
-
Balloon
-
Tape
-
Scissors
-
Confetti (purchase or homemade from cut-up paper or ribbon)
-
Optional: stickers, markers, star cutouts, or glitter for decorating, star hole punch

How to Make the Confetti Popper
Watch it in Action:
1. Prep the Balloon
Tie the end of a balloon (just like you would before blowing it up). Then cut off the rounded top portion of the balloon, leaving the tied end intact.
2. Attach the Balloon to the Tube
Stretch the open end of the balloon over one end of the toilet paper roll. Make sure it’s snug, then secure it with tape to hold it in place. It can go over or under your decorations. Either way works just fine.Â
3. Decorate the Tube
Wrap the outside of the toilet paper roll with patriotic paper, paint it, color it with markers, use stickers. Add stars, stripes, or glitter for extra sparkle.

4. Fill with Confetti
Turn the tube upright and fill it with a small handful of red, white, and blue confetti. I used a star punch and cut up our scrapbook paper for the confetti. You could also use tissue paper paper circles from a hole punch, or bits of curling ribbon.Â

5. Launch the Confetti!
Hold the tube with one hand, pull down on the knotted balloon with the other, then let go. Watch the confetti fly!

Safety & Clean-Up Tips
-
Supervise young children while launching to avoid popping near eyes or faces.
-
Use biodegradable or paper confetti for easier cleanup and eco-friendliness.
-
Use outdoors or in a space you don’t mind getting festive!

The Science Behind It
This confetti popper is a fun way to explore basic physics concepts:
-
Force & Motion: When you pull back the balloon, you create potential energy. Letting go releases that energy as kinetic force, which propels the confetti into the air.
-
Air Resistance: As the confetti pieces travel through the air, they slow down and flutter because of air resistance. This is why lighter materials like tissue paper or paper stars create a more dramatic effect.
-
Projectile Motion: The confetti follows a curved path as it flies—called a trajectory—just like fireworks or other objects launched with force.
-
Elastic Potential Energy: The stretched balloon stores energy that is quickly released, making this a great example of how elastic materials can perform work.
Kids will experience all these principles through play, making it a great hands-on physics activity!

Educational Tie-Ins
-
STEM in Action: Teaches force, motion, and air resistance.
-
