If you’re looking for a truly eye-catching, active, and messy-fun 4th of July craft, this Exploding Paint Fireworks craft delivers! It combines science and art in a colorful, exciting way. Kids will love the thrill of watching their patriotic-colored paint bags burst and create firework-like splatters on the canvas.
This is a great summer craft project, a STEM-art crossover, or just a fun way to get kids creating outside.Â

Supplies Needed for the Exploding Paint Fireworks:

-
Zip-top sandwich or snack-sized plastic bags (the snack-sized ones pop more quickly)
-
Baking soda
-
Vinegar
-
Small tissue squares- I tried both paper towels & Kleenex squares. The Kleenex worked much better!
-
Tape (optional)
-
Large paper sheets of white paper, canvas, or cardboard (as the “firework” surface)
How to Do the Exploding Paint Fireworks Craft
Watch It in Action
1. Prep the Paint Surface
Lay out large paper, canvas, or cardboard. You can do it outside, in a bin or on a tarp. This will catch the exploding paint! I rolled out black paper and held it down on the corners with rocks.Â
2. Add Paint and Vinegar To the Bag
Pour a few tablespoons of paint into the bags. I used red, white, blue and yellow. Add about 1/4 cup of vinegar. Seal temporarily or leave it open for the next step. I propped them open in bowls. Optional: Add a little glitter for some sparkle!Â

3. Prepare the Baking Soda Packet
Spoon 1–2 tablespoons of baking soda into the center of a small square of tissue. Fold it up into a little packet.Â
4. Add the Packet and Seal the Bag Quickly
Place the baking soda packet inside the bag, but don’t let it touch the liquid yet (you can tape it to the inside top if you want a delay). Or, just drop it in when you are ready for it to go! Seal the bag fully.

5. Shake and Place!
Give it a quick shake, place the bag on the paint surface, and step back! It will bubble, swell up and then POP splashing out the paint!Â

6. Watch it Explode!
As the baking soda and vinegar mix, gas builds up and causes the bag to pop—splatting colored paint in every direction!

You can use the bags another time by adding a bit more vinegar and baking soda. Shake it up and let it go again!Â
Educational Benefits
-
Science in Action: Teaches chemical reactions (acid + base = CO2 gas).
-
Art Through Experimentation: Blends STEM and visual creativity with unpredictable, unique results.
-
Sensory & Physical Engagement: Great for kids who love tactile, big-movement activities.
-
Color Theory: Observe how red, white, and blue mix and layer in splatters.

Safety & Clean-Up Tips
- Always protect surfaces—this activity can stain driveways or patios! Place a tarp, cardboard, or large paper underneath to catch splatter. I used a hose to wash it off before it dried and it washed off easily.Â
- Do this outdoors or in a washable area.
- Have kids wear old clothes or smocks.
- Let artwork dry flat before displaying.
This Exploding Paint Bag Fireworks Craft is a guaranteed hit for your 4th of July lineup. It’s a perfect mix of chaos, chemistry, and creativity that results in art as bold as the celebration itself!
