Hershey chocolate bars are the perfect treat to use when practicing fractions! Math is always more fun when it’s hands-on (and delicious). I have this really fun Hershey Fractions book and decided it was time to grab some candy bars and turn snack time into a fraction learning experience.
To make it even more engaging, I created a printable set of Hershey Fractions cards that pair perfectly with the book. These are way more fun than worksheets!

Hershey Fractions Math Activity
If you haven’t seen the book The Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Fractions Book by Jerry Pallotta, you should definitely check it out! It’s a perfect introduction to fractions in a visual and relatable way using a 12-piece Hershey’s chocolate bar as a manipulative.
Why We Love This Book:
- Engaging real-world math application
- Perfect resource for visual learners
- Great introduction to fractions, division, and equal parts
- Ties in hands-on learning with a tasty treat
This book is part of a larger candy math series, and we love using it for interactive learning. Plus, let’s be honest—chocolate makes everything better! My kids were thrilled at the idea of using Hershey bars for math, and I happily gave in to their requests.

The set of Hershey Fractions cards I made to go along with the book has 14 different pairs of matching cards for the different fractions you can make with a Hershey’s candy bar. Hershey bars have 12 equal pieces. You can easily use them to learn about twelfths, sixths, fourths, and thirds.

Printable Hershey Fractions Cards
To go along with the book, I created a set of Hershey Fractions matching cards. This printable pack includes 14 different pairs of fraction cards that illustrate how you can break a Hershey’s chocolate bar into equal parts to represent different fractions.
Concepts Covered:
- Identifying fractions (e.g., 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, etc.)
- Equivalent fractions
- Comparing fractions
- Addition and subtraction of fractions
- Division using unit fractions
These printable fraction cards are a great way to reinforce fraction concepts while keeping the whole class engaged in a fun and hands-on way!
How to Use the Hershey Fraction Cards
Lay Out the Matching Cards – Spread out the fraction cards and the matching Hershey bar illustrations.
Match the Fractions – Have your child match the fraction notation (e.g., 1/2, 1/4) to the correct chocolate bar representation.
Use Real Hershey Bars – Bring in real chocolate bars to match the visual fractions.
Break the Chocolate into Pieces – Physically break the bars to match the fractions and discuss how each section represents a part of the whole.
Explore More Fraction Concepts – Talk about parts of a whole, equivalent fractions (e.g., 2/4 = 1/2), comparing sizes, or even practice adding fractions using multiple Hershey bars.
Laminate the Cards – If you plan to use them multiple times, laminate them to prevent melty chocolate fingerprints!
Even my preschooler played along! While he’s not quite ready for fractions, this activity served as a great counting and grouping lesson.
