Letter U can be a tricky one, but there are plenty of unique and unexpected words to explore! Here are some great ideas to use as themes for your Letter U week:

Letter U makes two common sounds: the short /u/ as in umbrella or under, and the long /u/ as in unicorn or ukulele.

Tips for teaching letter U:

  • Act it out! Pretend to go “up” and “under”
  • Use flashcards and real items beginning with both long and short U sounds
  • Draw attention to your mouth shape when forming the sound
  • Reinforce learning with mirror play and singing U-themed phonics songs

You can also practice writing big U’s in the air or with paintbrushes on outdoor pavement.

This adorable U is for Ukulele craft is simple and musical!

Supplies:

  • Letter U printable template
  • Crayons or markers
  • Printable ukulele (included in the Letter U pack)

Color, cut, and paste your ukulele onto a large letter U. Add paper strings with yarn or draw them on with pencil! You can even make your own cardboard ukulele if you want to go 3D.

Preschool Letter U Snack: U is for Urchin

Make a Sea Urchin snack using healthy treats and a bit of creativity!

You’ll need:

  • Half an orange or apple
  • Toothpicks
  • Raisins, Cheerios, grapes, or dried fruit

Insert the toothpicks into the fruit and thread the snacks on like spines. Not only is it nutritious and fun to eat, it strengthens fine motor skills as kids build and snack!

Fine Motor and Hands-On Letter U Activities

  • Umbrella Shape Collage: Cut and glue paper umbrellas
  • Under the Table Art: Tape paper under a table and let kids color “under” it
  • Unicorn Headbands: Make a wearable unicorn horn with paper and glitter

Favorite Letter U Moments This Week

Our ukulele craft sparked some fun music moments, and kids got a big kick out of sitting “upside down” and reading Inside Outside Upside Down. Letter U turned out to be unexpectedly unforgettable!
