Christmas Tracing Worksheets for Kids
Christmas is one of my favorite times to add a little extra seasonal fun to our learning activities. When my children were younger, I loved finding simple ways to make handwriting and fine motor practice more interesting.
I originally made these Christmas tracing pages for my youngest, who was learning to write and absolutely loved tracing letters and words. We printed the pages and turned them into a little Christmas coloring book. She had so much fun tracing and coloring the pictures!
My 6-year-old enjoyed them too. He was learning to read and spell, so tracing the Christmas vocabulary words gave him another way to practice.
I love activities like this because they’re simple to prepare but can be used in several different ways.

What’s Included in the Christmas Tracing Worksheets?
This printable set includes 12 different Christmas pictures with matching words to trace.
The designs are:
- Christmas Light
- Wreath
- Star
- Bell
- Christmas Tree
- Gift
- Elf
- Stocking
- Santa Claus
- Candy Cane
- Snowman
- Reindeer
Each worksheet includes a Christmas-themed picture with lines for tracing and the name of the picture printed in light gray.
Children can practice following the lines of the picture, trace the letters in the word, and then color the completed page.
The variety of pictures makes it easy to use one worksheet at a time or create a complete Christmas tracing book.

How to Use the Christmas Tracing Worksheets
There are several ways to use these printable Christmas activities, depending on your child’s age and ability.
1. Trace the Christmas Pictures
Start by having your child trace the outlines of the Christmas picture. Encourage them to follow the lines slowly and carefully.
Tracing pictures gives children opportunities to practice controlling a pencil and following different kinds of lines and curves.
For younger preschoolers, you can focus on tracing the pictures without requiring them to complete the words.
2. Practice Christmas Handwriting
Each page includes a Christmas word written in light gray. Children can trace the letters to practice letter formation and become more familiar with written words.
For children who are just beginning to write, you can say the letter names or sounds together as they trace. Older children can try writing the word independently on another piece of paper after tracing it.
3. Color the Christmas Pictures
Once the tracing is finished, let children color their pictures!
This turns each worksheet into a fun Christmas coloring page and gives kids another opportunity to practice pencil or crayon control.
They can use traditional Christmas colors or get creative with their own designs.
4. Make a Christmas Tracing Book
This was one of our favorite ways to use the worksheets! Print all 12 pages and staple or bind them together to create a little Christmas activity book. Children can complete one or two pages each day leading up to Christmas. By the end, they’ll have their own collection of Christmas pictures and handwriting practice to look back through.
What Skills Do Christmas Tracing Worksheets Teach?
Although these worksheets look simple, they provide opportunities to practice several important early learning skills.
Fine Motor Skills
Tracing and coloring require children to use the small muscles in their hands and fingers.
These activities can help children practice the controlled movements needed for drawing and handwriting.
Pencil Control
Following the lines of a picture encourages children to slow down and guide their pencil in a specific direction.
They can practice straight lines, curves, corners, and changes in direction.
Hand-Eye Coordination
Tracing involves coordinating what children see on the page with how they move their pencil.
Letter Recognition and Handwriting
The Christmas vocabulary words give children opportunities to recognize letters and practice forming them.
Vocabulary and Early Literacy
As children trace the pictures and words, talk about what each Christmas item represents.
You can point out beginning sounds, count syllables, or look for familiar letters.
For example, ask:
- What sound does snowman begin with?
- Which words start with the same letter?
- Can you find the letter S in Santa Claus?
- How many syllables are in reindeer?
These little conversations can add language and literacy practice to a simple tracing activity.
Christmas Tracing Activities for Different Ages
One thing I like about these worksheets is that you can adapt them for different learning levels.
- Younger preschoolers: Focus on tracing the pictures and coloring. Offer help as needed, and don’t worry about perfectly following every line.
- Older preschoolers and pre-K: Encourage children to trace the pictures and begin practicing the matching words.
- Kindergarteners: Have children trace both the pictures and the words, then identify beginning sounds or letters.
- First graders and other early writers: Challenge children to write the Christmas words independently or use them in short sentences.
Children develop handwriting skills at different rates, so you can adjust the activity to fit their needs.
More Ways to Use These Christmas Tracing Pages
Want to get even more use from the printable set?
- Christmas learning centers: Add a few pages to your preschool or kindergarten writing center.
- Morning work: Set out a tracing page for a quiet activity as children begin their school day.
- Christmas countdown: Complete one worksheet each day for 12 days.
- Vocabulary practice: Use the pictures to talk about Christmas words, beginning sounds, and syllables.
- Christmas activity books: Combine the pages into a small booklet for your children or students.
- Reusable tracing practice: Place the pages in dry-erase pockets or laminate them and use appropriate dry-erase markers so children can practice more than once.
Tips for Helping Young Children with Tracing
If your child is new to tracing, here are a few simple ways to make the activity more successful.
- Start with a picture that has larger, simpler lines.
- Let children use a crayon or thicker writing tool if that’s more comfortable.
- Demonstrate how to trace slowly before asking them to try.
- Encourage short practice sessions rather than expecting children to finish several pages at once.
- Celebrate their effort and progress instead of focusing on perfectly traced lines.
Remember, the goal is to help children build confidence and enjoy practicing!
