Teaching the Letter W: Sound and Recognition Tips

The letter W makes the /w/ sound, like in water, wagon, and wonder. It’s a voiced consonant made with rounded lips and a little puff of air.

Phonics Teaching Tips:

  • Have children practice saying “w-w-w” like a train whistle to reinforce the /w/ sound.

  • Use mirrors to help them see their lips round like a circle.

  • Emphasize the difference between W and V, which can sound similar to little learners.

  • Reinforce with real objects and visuals that begin with W.

Practice recognition in fun ways—such as letter hunts, hands-on crafts, or tracing games with sand or finger paint.

Preschool Letter W Craft: W is for Weather

Make a creative Weather W Craft using the printable template. Color or paint a large W, then glue on shapes that represent different types of weather: clouds, raindrops, suns, and lightning bolts.

Add cotton balls for clouds and tissue paper for rain or sunrays to give it a sensory, tactile feel!

Alternate idea: W is for Web. Draw or glue yarn into a spider web shape across the letter W.

Preschool Letter W Snack: W is for Wormy Apples

Make a silly and easy snack with Wormy Apples! Cut a hole in an apple using a small spoon or knife. Insert a gummy worm into the hole to make it look like it’s crawling out.

You could also:

  • Make a waffle tower with fruit for breakfast

  • Serve watermelon wedges for snack time

  • Enjoy whipped cream on fruit for a sweet W-themed treat

Favorite Letter W Moments This Week

We had so much fun this week making wormy apples and crafting our W is for Weather project. The kids especially loved the window tracing activity and playing with the weather chart each morning. Simple ideas really brought the letter W to life! This week also sparked lots of curiosity about wind and how weather works, making it a perfect bridge into science themes.
