Lincoln and Washington President Cookies

If you want a fun idea for President’s Day this year, try these adorable president cookies!

This month’s book club theme is presidents. We have a couple of favorite books that I wanted to share with you this month: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln by Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire. These authors make some of our favorite books!   We have been reading them this month for President’s Day. My kids have really been loving them and can’t wait to read more of them together.

To go along with these books, we made some cute little President Cookies.

 Learning About the Presidents

What I love about these two books is that they teach the history of Lincoln and Washington in such a fun and interesting way. They tell the stories of their lives in a way that keeps kids begging for more. The illustrations in the books are beautiful, too. There are pictures on every page.

How To Make the President Cookies:

Now for our yummy President Cookie treat!  We made these darling President’s Day cookies to represent both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. They are easy to make and kids can even make their own!

To make these President cookies we used vanilla wafer cookies, mini chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and mini Hershey’s chocolate bars.

Begin by melting a small amount of the chocolate chips in the microwave. Pour it into a piping bag or a small zipper plastic bag with a tiny bit of a corner cut off. You will use this for decorating the cookies as well as attaching pieces to each other.

Next, cut the mini marshmallows in half for George Washington’s wig and beard.  Use the melted chocolate to attach the wig to the top of one of the wafers. Place the beard at the bottom of the wafer.

Draw on a face with the melted chocolate, too.

Abraham Lincoln’s beard is made from mini chocolate chips. Pipe a line of melted chocolate around the circle to attach the mini chocolate chips around.

Draw on his face with the melted chocolate.

Lincoln’s hat is made from a fun size Hershey bar cut into pieces. You’ll use a larger piece for the top of the hat and a smaller piece for the brim.

The kids loved helping me put these all together. What a sweet way to learn about the presidents!

I also have a round-up post with tons of President’s Day Learning Activities. I made a Free Sort the Coins by the Presidents printable that you can get in that post!
