If you are looking for an awesome book to read with your kids or students, I highly recommend the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.  Today I want to share with you a book study to accompany this book.  This is a book that inspires the desire to help others. When you read it, you want to run out and save the people around the world. A book like that needs to be read and shared.

About the Book: A Long Walk to Water

Long Walk to Water Book about Sudan

The book, A Long Walk to Water is a New York Times Best Seller.  The book tells two stories, told in alternating sections, about two eleven-year-olds in Sudan, a girl in 2008 and a boy in 1985. The girl, Nya, is fetching water from a pond that is two hours’ walk from her home: she makes two trips to the pond every day.  The boy, Salva, becomes one of the “lost boys” of Sudan, refugees who cover the African continent on foot as they search for their families and for a safe place to stay. Enduring every hardship from loneliness to attack by armed rebels to contact with killer lions and crocodiles, Salva is a survivor, and his story goes on to intersect with Nya’s in an incredible and moving way.

I heard about this book from the book Read Aloud Family. It was highly recommended, so I ordered a copy.  My 12-year-old daughter read it first and loved it.  She told me I had to read it right away.  I decided to read it with my son who is 8. Each night as we finished a chapter he begged for more. That is always a good sign.  This story covers hard things, but is done in such a way that children can read it and learn from it.  It is a sad story and makes you realize how blessed you are. But, it also helps make you aware of the needs of others around the world. There were many parts of the book that brought me to tears as I read them aloud to my son.
