Online Homeschool Classes with Bridgeway Academy

With the way technology is taking over these days more people are turning to online homeschool options. We have used a few different online learning sites over the years that we have homeschooled. We were curious and excited about the opportunity to try out one of Bridgeway Academy’s online classes.  Let me just say that my son, LOVED this class so much!  It was a fabulous and new way of learning for him.

Live Online Homeschool Classes:

Bridgeway Academy has a series of Online Homeschool Co-ops called Learning Labs.  They are 9-week classes that meet once a week for an hour to an hour and half depending on the age of the students.   The classes are live and have students from all around the world involved. There are courses for students in all grades.

We participated in a science class about the Arctic.  It was based on the Magic Tree House books Polar Bears Past Bedtime and Eve of the Emperor Penguin. Since we are completely in love with the Magic Tree House books in our house, my son was so excited about the topic of this class.  Also, animals and nature are his absolute favorite topics to study.

Sign-up and instructions were clear and easy to understand. When we registered, we receive a syllabus and a handbook giving all of the details of the class. We were also given instructions for setting up our computer for the classes. The classes were conducted in Jigsaw Meeting Platform which was a really great format for these classes. We did have to have updated Java, a headset and a webcam.

How the Online Homeschool Classes Work:

In the classes there are all kinds of different ways to interact and learn. The teacher used powerpoint presentations, outside links that the kids can visit (such as National Geographic and other educational sites), a whiteboard for drawings and other information, and chatting on the side of the screen. You can see on a map where everyone is from. My son loved this feature! They can be given permission to talk by the teacher. They had homework assignments that were completed outside of the class time and were turned in through Moodle. There were about 10 students in his class ranging in ages from 6-10.

Each week in class they discussed different topics related to the Arctic and Antarctic. They learned about animals in the Arctic, the climate and landscape. When I asked my son what his favorite parts were about his Bridgeway Academy classes he said he loved being able to get to know all of the kids from around the world. He learned a LOT about penguins, Antarctica and polar bears, and it was REALLY, REALLY fun. He also said that he REALLY wants to do it again. He loved the cool facts that Mrs. Thomas (his teacher) taught him. His favorite thing that he remembered was that polar bears can smell a mile away!

If you are looking for a great class for your kids, this is a really fun thing to look into. I was so impressed with the quality of teaching and the excitement that my son showed at attending his class each week. There was a time when we had to miss a class and he was so disappointed. The nice thing about this set-up though is that the classes are recorded and can be watched back later. So, if you have something come up and you have to miss a class, you can catch up on what was missed. The teacher was very knowledgeable and worked so well with the group of students. She was enthusiastic about what she was teaching and passed it on to her students. Also, for parents who need help supplementing in various subjects, these classes can be a great help.
