Pan For Gold

We are studying American History this year and are really immersing ourselves into it with books, projects, field trips and more. When I had the chance to review aLearn How to Pan for Gold kit from Discover with Dr. Cool, I was really excited because it fit in perfectly with all we were learning.

The Pan for Gold Kit comes with a prospector pan with ridged edges (to collect the gold pieces), two bags of dirt that have gold pieces and flakes in them, a big fools “gold” nugget, a storage jar, a bag, tweezers, a magnifying glass, and two booklets for learning and expanding the activity. This set has won multiple toy awards.

My kids really enjoyed the Pan for Gold set. There was a beginner practice bag that we started with and used for the younger kids. Then once we got the hang of it all, we used the more advanced bag of dirt. The pieces were smaller and more flake-like in the advanced dirt bag. I let them take turns trying it out and they really had fun ding it. We have read several books talking about the Gold Rush, so it was fun for them to get a little taste of what it was like.

You start with a big bucket or large bowl of water. Dump the bag of dirt into the prospector pan and get a little water in it. Shake it around… As you shake, tilt it towards the edge with the ridges. The gold and the sand will separate allowing you to see the gold pieces.

Once you find some gold pieces, you can collect the gold pieces into the jar to keep. Keep going until only sand remains.
