Looking for the best kids’ books that have been turned into movies? Whether you’re planning a family movie night or looking for a great book to read together before watching its adaptation, this list has you covered!
Books vs. Movies: Which Do You Prefer?
There’s always a debate about whether the book or the movie is better. Some love the depth and imagination that books offer, while others enjoy seeing stories come to life on the big screen. Which do you prefer?
In our house, we love to read the book first and then make the movie a special reward for finishing. It’s a great way to encourage kids to read while also making the experience fun and interactive. Sometimes, we even have a discussion comparing the book and the movie—what was left out, what changed, and which one we liked better.
Here are some fun ways to make books and movies a learning experience:
- Read the book together as a family before watching the movie.
- Have a Book vs. Movie discussion and compare the two.
- Write a short book review and then a movie review to analyze differences.
- Learn about the author and what inspired them to write the book.
- If the book is based on history or real-life events, take time to learn about that era.
We LOVE books over here. You would probably be shocked at the amount of books in our house. But we read them. Another thing we really enjoy is watching a great movie. There are so many classic kid books that have been made into movies and today I have a big list of them for you.

Here are a few ways to make books and movies into a lesson for your school or homeschool:
- Read the book and make it into a unit study.
- Learn the history surrounding the story.
- Learn about the author and/or producer.
- Use books/movies to learn vocabulary or spelling.
- Use favorite passages or quotes from the books for copywork.
- Write a book and movie comparison (or have a discussion for younger kids).
- Have a story themed family movie night party.

What did you think about this list? Â Which one is your favorite?

I love books! I hope my youngest loves them as much as I do. Thanks for the list of books.
Love this! Thank you! Will definitely be pinning this one.
Thanks for this list – I’m always looking for movies for my family – and though we are an almost grown-up family we still enjoy a movie that has a good story. I think we’d enjoy many of these, some of which we’ve enjoyed as books. Thanks again.
I love this list. We are always looking for good movies for us to share on Family Movie Night and you just gave me a shoe bunch of ideas. Much appreciated!
I didn’t realize how many of those movies were based on books. Seeing as books are always so much better, I have got to get a hold of some of those books. However, this list will be great to help us pick different movies as we make our way through the alphabet on our Movie and Popcorn night. We are on our second time through this year and are back to the letter K.
Thanks for sharing
What a fun idea! Thanks for sharing.
