What Is Solfège?

Solfège is a music teaching method that uses syllables—Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do—to help students understand pitch and scale relationships. It’s often used with singers and musicians in sight-singing, ear training, and music literacy programs. (Just think of The Sound of Music song!)

What Are Curwen Hand Signs?

Curwen hand signs are hand gestures created by John Spencer Curwen in the 1800s to accompany the solfège syllables. These signs provide a visual and kinesthetic representation of pitch, helping students internalize how music moves up and down.

Each hand sign matches a solfège syllable and is performed at a different height to show pitch:

Syllable Hand Sign Description Position
Do Closed fist Waist level
Re Flat hands angled upward Above Do
Mi Flat horizontal hands, palm down Mid-chest
Fa Thumbs down Above Mi
Sol Palm towards you, thumb facing up Shoulder level
La Curved palm, as if holding a ball Above Sol
Ti Pointing upward Near forehead
Do (high) Closed fist again Above head

Movable Do vs. Chromatic Solfège

Most educators use the movable Do system, where “Do” is the first note of any major scale—regardless of the key. This means the solfège syllables follow the whole and half step pattern of a major scale, with half steps between Mi–Fa and Ti–Do.

For advanced learners, there’s also chromatic solfège, which includes syllables for all 12 notes in the chromatic scale. It uses altered syllables like Di (sharp Do) or Ra (flat Re) to name every half step. This method is used in sight-singing and music theory to teach sharps, flats, and modulations.

You can download and print a full-color solfège chart showing each hand sign from Do to high Do. I’ve also created a set of individual printable solfège cards, perfect for:

  • Bulletin boards

  • Group practice

  • Flash card games

  • Matching activities

Fun Ideas for Using Solfège in Lessons

  • Echo games – Sing or play a short melody and have kids repeat with hand signs

  • Scale scramble – Shuffle the flash cards and have kids reorder them

  • Pitch match – Play a note and ask students to identify the correct syllable and hand sign

  • Musical charades – Students act out the sign and others guess the syllable

Using Solfège with Handbells, Boomwhackers, and Other Classroom Instruments

Solfège becomes even more fun and effective when paired with hands-on instruments like handbells, boomwhackers, or xylophones. These colorful tools help students see, hear, and feel pitch relationships, making abstract music concepts easier to understand.

Color-Coded Note Matching

Many beginner-friendly instruments are color-coded by pitch, which lines up beautifully with solfège:

Note Solfège Color (Standard for Boomwhackers/Handbells)
C Do Red
D Re Orange
E Mi Yellow
F Fa Green
G Sol Light Blue
A La Darker Blue
B Ti Pink or Magenta
High C Do Red again

My solfège chart & cards match these colors so you can easily use them with these beginner instruments!

Activity Ideas:

  • Play & sign patterns (e.g., “Mi-Re-Do”) using piano, handbells or boomwhackers.

  • Let kids match hand signs to colors using the chart or cards.

  • Use songs like “Hot Cross Buns” or “Mary Had a Little Lamb” to reinforce learning with voice + instruments.

Educational Games & Teaching Tips

Try these interactive ideas:

  • Solfège Bingo – Call a note and let kids mark it off.

  • Sing & Show – Play a melody and have students respond with hand signs.

  • Melody Builders – Assign each student a note (bell or boomwhacker) and build tunes together.

By combining solfège with simple classroom instruments, you’re giving kids an engaging, physical, and musical way to understand pitch, intervals, and harmony. It’s fun, memorable, and a great bridge to reading music!

Why Solfège Matters

Solfège is more than just singing syllables—it helps kids:

  • Understand pitch and scale structure

  • Improve ear training and memory

  • Develop sight-singing skills

  • Build music literacy from the ground up

And with hand signs and instruments, it becomes a full-body musical experience that sticks.
