Active & Outdoor Group Games

These group games are perfect for burning energy, getting in some physical activity, teamwork, and big laughs.

Capture the Flag

This classic group game is always a favorite! Split into two teams. Each hides a “flag” and tries to capture the opposing team’s flag without getting tagged. Great for large outdoor spaces.

Sharks and Minnows

One player is the shark in the middle. Other participants (minnows) try to run past without being tagged. Tagged players join the shark until one remains.

Freeze Tag

Classic game where “it” tags players who must freeze until another player unfreezes them.

Relay Races

Create relay races with fun elements—egg on a spoon, sack races, or balance challenges.

Red Light, Green Light

One player calls out commands. Players move on “green light” and freeze on “red light.”

Duck, Duck, Goose

Perfect for preschool and early elementary kids. Circle up and take turns being “it.”

Water Balloon Toss

Great for summer! Pairs toss a water balloon and step back after each catch until it pops.

Kick the Can

A mix of hide-and-seek and tag. One person guards a can while others hide and try to kick it without being tagged.

Train Tag

One person is “it” and tags others. Tagged players form a train by linking hands. The last person added becomes the new “it.”

Sharks and Minnows

One or two players are sharks. The rest are minnows. When the sharks say “Go!” the minnows try to run to the other side without being tagged. Tagged players become sharks.

Rainbow Run

Spread colored stations across the play area using pieces of colored paper. Call out a color and players must run to that color without bumping into each other.

Minefield

One blindfolded player is guided through an “obstacle course” using only verbal directions.

Blob Tag

When someone gets tagged, they join hands with “it” to tag others until a giant blob forms! Last player untagged wins.

Balloon Waddle Race

Put a balloon between your knees and race—no hands! Can be done indoors or outdoors.

Steal the Bacon

You will need a soft object to represent “the bacon”.  Each team member lines up and is assigned numbers. When a number is called, those players race to grab the object and return to their team without being tagged.

Elbow Tag (also sometimes called Missionary Tag)

Players pair up and link elbows. One player is “it,” one is “loose.” The loose player tries to escape being tagged by linking elbows with a new pair, causing their partner to become the loose one.

Quiet or Indoor Group Games

These calm group games are great for indoor settings, as an icebreaker, team building, transitions, winding down, or when energy levels are low but connection is still the goal.

Silent Ball

Stand in a circle and toss a ball—quietly! Drop it or make noise, and you’re out.

Telephone

Whisper a sentence around the circle and laugh at the changed message at the end.

20 Questions

Think of a person, place, or thing. Others have 20 yes/no questions to guess what it is.

Would You Rather?

Take turns asking silly or thoughtful questions. Use my printable cards to help you! Great for discussion and laughter.

Pass the Face

One person makes a silly face and turns to the next player, who copies and adds something new. Continue around the circle.

Alphabet Categories

Pick a category (food, animals) and go around saying items in alphabetical order. Try Categories elimination version: Choose any category. Players have to go in a circle and name something (does not have to be alphabetical). If you hesitate or repeat, you are out.

Story Chain

Each person adds one sentence to a piece of paper to build a wacky, collaborative story. Fold the paper as you go so people cannot see each part until the end.

Bang!

A fast-paced circle game where one player points and yells “Bang!” while the target ducks and their neighbors face off to shout “Bang!” at each other. The slower player is out! Great for sharpening reflexes and keeping a group on their toes.

Back Drawing

The last person in line draws a letter or shape on the back of the person in front. It passes up the line until the first person guesses it out loud.

Pencil Pass

Without talking, pass a pencil from player to player around the circle using only elbows or knees. Great for quiet focus and giggles.

Four Corners

Number the corners 1-4. Players pick a corner, and one person in the middle calls one out without looking. Those players are out.

Mystery Drawing

One player describes a scene while the others try to draw it without seeing it. Compare drawings at the end!

Who’s Missing?

One player leaves the room. While they’re gone, one person hides. When the player returns, they try to guess who is missing.

Two Truths and a Lie

Players tell two true things and one lie—others guess the lie.

Murder in the Dark

In this suspenseful party game, players draw cards (or slips of paper) to assign secret roles: one murderer, one detective, and the rest are townspeople. Lights go off, the murderer “kills” by tapping players, and when a body is found, the detective must question others to solve the mystery. Best played with lights dimmed or off for added drama!

Human Bingo

You will need my Printable Getting to Know You Bingo sheets.  Players walk around the room finding people who match the descriptions and writing their names. First to fill a row wins.

Statue

Players freeze like statues when the music stops (or on cue). The leader tries to make them laugh or move without touching.

Charades

Act out a word or phrase without speaking while others guess. Great for mixed ages!

Musical Chairs

Classic fast-paced game that always ends in giggles.

Balloon Pop Relay

Each player races to sit and pop a balloon. Add tasks inside for added fun! Tie them to ankles to make it more interesting!

Pass the Present

Wrap a gift in many layers. Pass it around to music and unwrap one layer at each stop.

Don’t Let the Balloon Touch the Ground

Keep the balloon in the air using only heads, elbows, or another silly rule!

Reverse Charades

One person guesses while the group acts out the word together.

Simon Says

Simple, flexible, and always a hit with little ones and adults alike.

Scavenger Hunt

Create a list and race to find items indoors or outside.

Pictionary

Use a whiteboard or paper to draw clues while others guess.

Hot Potato

Pass an object while music plays—stop the music and whoever’s holding it is out!

Secret Leader

One player leaves the room. The group selects a “leader” who will begin doing motions. Everyone copies the leader. The guesser returns and tries to figure out who’s in charge.

Human Knot

Stand in a circle, grab hands with two people across from you, then work together to untangle.

Build a Bridge Challenge

Using limited supplies (like popsicle sticks or blocks), teams build a structure that holds weight.

Marshmallow Tower

Teams use spaghetti, tape, and a marshmallow to build the tallest tower.

Group Juggle

Add balls to a toss pattern to build rhythm and teamwork.

The Laughing Game

Try to make others laugh without laughing yourself. Tougher than it sounds!

Shoe Mix-Up

Everyone removes a shoe and piles them. Players race to find and return their partner’s shoe.

Name That Sound

Blindfolded players guess mystery sounds made by others using objects around the room.

Gigglebelly

Sit in a circle with your head on the next person’s belly. Say a silly sentence. The giggles multiply!.

Human Bingo

Find people who match descriptions on your bingo sheet—“has a pet bird” or “can whistle.”

Sardines

Reverse hide-and-seek. One person hides and others look. When found, join them until all are hidden.

Giant Rock-Paper-Scissors

Players pair up and play Rock-Paper-Scissors. Winners keep playing each other. Losers become fans and cheer for their winner. Game ends with two finalists and lots of cheering! Try the giants, wizards, elves versions- with sounds & actions!

Find Your Group
Create cards with different categories (multiple of each category) such as fruit names, animals, numbers, etc.  Give each player a card. When you say “Go,” they silently act out or find their group members based on matching category.

Countdown Clusters

Call out “Find a group of 3!” and everyone must quickly form clusters of that number. Anyone left out sits out that round. Change the number each time.

Island Rescue

You will need hula hoops or large circles (paper plates, chalk, etc.) “Islands” are spread out. On “Go,” players jump from one to another without touching the floor (“lava”). Can also be a relay with players carrying items to “rescue.”

Jump the River

You will need tape or jump ropes to mark “river” lines.  Set two lines a few inches apart. Kids jump over. Widen the river after each round to increase difficulty.

Group Sculpture

Prepare some note cards with themes written on them.  Divide into small groups. Assign each a theme (e.g., tree, castle, animal). They must create a still sculpture using only their bodies in 60 seconds. Others guess what they are!

Silent Secret Word

Prepare paper slips with random words on them. One person leaves the room. A secret word is chosen. When they return, the group casually tries to use the word without making it obvious. The player tries to guess the word.

Crowd Charades

Prepare some word prompts. Use my printable charade cards.  One person leaves the room. The group acts out a word or phrase in unison when they return. Guess correctly to win a point.

Toe Grab Relay

You’ll need small items like socks, toys, or clothespins. Teams race to pick up objects using only their toes and carry them to a designated spot.

Puzzle Piece Relay

Prepare by having puzzle pieces separated and scattered.  Teams race to collect one puzzle piece at a time and assemble it. Great for team-building and problem-solving.

Secret Signal

One person leaves. The group picks a “signal sender” who starts a subtle motion (e.g., scratching nose). Everyone mimics. The player returns and guesses who is leading the signal.

Hoop Pass Challenge

Players hold hands in a circle. Try to pass a hula hoop all the way around the circle without breaking the chain. Time it or race other groups!

Sound Ball

Toss an imaginary ball to another player while making a unique sound. They must catch it using the same sound. Hilarious improv and quick thinking!
