When it comes to gift giving in our family, I try to be intentional and creative. I get tired of the same toys that are exciting for a week and then forgotten at the bottom of a bin. I love gifts that spark curiosity, creativity, movement, or connection.

With the holidays coming up, here are some unique gift ideas for kids that go beyond the typical toy aisle—and truly surprise and delight.

Unique Gifts for Kids

Awesome & Unique Gifts for Kids

Experience Gifts Kids Remember

Some of the most meaningful gifts aren’t things at all.

Experience gifts create memories and give kids something to look forward to long after the wrapping paper is gone.

Ideas to try:

  • Zoo, aquarium, or museum passes

  • Children’s theater tickets or concerts

  • Art, music, or sports classes

  • A family day trip or mini getaway

One of our favorite traditions has been gifting a family experience instead of piles of presents. Some families even wrap a clue or map and let kids “unwrap” the destination on Christmas morning—such a fun idea!

Subscription Gifts That Keep Giving

Subscription gifts are exciting because they show up again and again throughout the year.

Consider:

  • Monthly science or craft kits

  • Book or magazine subscriptions

  • Geography, nature, or cultural boxes

  • Creative coding or puzzle subscriptions

These gifts feel special every time they arrive—and don’t overwhelm kids all at once.

Gifts That Inspire Reading & Curiosity

Books are always a win in our house—but especially books that inspire kids to do something, not just read.

Look for:

  • Interactive books with flaps, gears, or experiments: How Machines Work book by David Macaulay is a fabulous example

  • Adventure-style books that spark imagination

  • Field-trip-in-a-book titles that explore science, history, or nature

  • Magazines kids can read all year long

Reading gifts are perfect for kids who love learning, exploring, or asking big questions.
