Word Building with Bag Clips

How This Idea Came to Be

While wandering the aisles of IKEA (as one does), I spotted their colorful bag clips and had a lightbulb moment. Why not turn them into a spelling tool? My kids already enjoyed playing with the ones I had at home!  I grabbed an extra pack, and the idea quickly grew into a favorite word building activity at our house!

How to Make the Word Building Game

Supplies You’ll Need:

Index Cards
Bag Clips (Ikea or similar)
Wet Erase Marker
Sharpie Marker

How to Set Up the Word Building Game:

Label the Clips: On the smooth side of each bag clip, write letters using a wet erase marker. Start with vowels or common consonants—whatever suits your current spelling or phonics focus.

Prepare the Word Cards: Fold index cards in half to give them more durability. Write consonant blends or word beginnings/endings on the left and right sides, leaving the middle blank for the vowel (or other letter) to be clipped in.

  • Example: On the left, write “c”; on the right, write “t.” With a clip that says “a,” your child builds the word “cat.”

Build Words: Let your child mix and match different clips to form real (and silly) words. It’s okay if some are nonsense—they’ll giggle and keep experimenting. That trial-and-error process builds confidence and letter-sound recognition.

Activity Variations to Keep It Fresh

  1. Silent E Builder: Use bag clips for silent “e” and practice long vowel word building (e.g., write “cak” on the card and clip on “e” to form “cake”).
  2. Word Families Race: Set a timer and see how many words from a particular word family (like -at or -ig) your child can build in 60 seconds.
  3. Sight Word Match-Up: Write common sight words on the clips and have your child match them to flashcards with pictures or sentences.
  4. Spelling Bee Twist: Say a word aloud and challenge your child to spell it using clips and cards.
  5. Mystery Word Challenge: You choose the left and right consonants and let your child test out different vowel clips to find the real word that completes the puzzle.
  6. Clip & Swap Game: Make cards with 2-3 letter words and have children change just one clip to create new words (e.g., pan → pin → pun).
  7. Color-Coded Vowels and Consonants: Use different colored markers for vowels vs. consonants to support visual learning and sorting.

Why It Works

  • Multisensory learning: Touching and moving letters helps reinforce spelling patterns.
  • Phonics practice: Encourages sound blending and decoding.
  • Fine motor skill development: Clipping and unclipping builds dexterity.
  • Creative thinking: Kids love trying new combinations and seeing what they can make.
