Printable New Year Writing Prompts for Kids

At the start of a new year we always need a fresh start at home and at school!  How about using some printable New Year Writing prompts for kids?

Use these on New Year’s day or during your first week back to school as you and your kiddos dream of all of your big goals for the year!

Sometimes it is difficult to get going after a long winter break. We started our homeschool back up today and my kids kept falling asleep! It was pretty funny.  I grabbed a great picture of my daughter asleep by the fire while doing some of her school work. How are your kids handling school after the long break?

How to Use the New Year Writing Prompts

I have two different set of printable writing prompts for you. One set is for elementary grades and the other is for the upper grade, middle school and high school.  Each set includes 15 different questions. There are themes about goal-setting, celebrations, self-reflection, and accomplishments. 

You can print them out and cut them up to pass out to kids, write them on the board in your classroom, or give them the whole sheet to let them choose what they want to write about. They can use their creativity or choose a prompt that is more in their comfort zone. 

These writing prompts could also be used as new year’s journaling prompts. Give kids a notebook to write in and have them write their answers in their journal. This is a great way to reflect on the past year and plan New Year’s resolutions for the upcoming year.

Here are a few of the questions from the elementary level set:

• What was the best thing that happened to you last year?
• What are three things you want to learn or try this year?
• If you could throw your own New Year’s party, what would it look like? 

Here are a few examples from the upper grades set:

• Reflect on one global event from last year and how it impacted you or your community.
• What does success look like for you in the new year?
• What habits do you want to change or build this year, and why?
