Looking for a quick and festive STEM project this holiday season? These Christmas Straw Rockets are the perfect mix of hands-on learning, creative crafting, and high-flying fun. Kids will love launching their reindeer through the air while exploring simple physics concepts like force, motion, and the engineering design process.

This is a perfect activity for:

  • Classroom holiday parties

  • Homeschool learning in December

  • Winter break boredom busters

  • Your “Christmas School” ideas

  • STEM or STEAM Christmas challenges

Let’s make some science magic fly!

What Are Christmas Straw Rockets?

A straw rocket uses air pressure from blowing into the straw to launch a rocket (or in this case, a cute little reindeer!). Kids get to choose their own flying character, then test how well it soars — making adjustments along the way to improve flight distance and speed.

  • Printable Christmas Straw rocket template – Download below.
  • Paper

  • Straws (paper or plastic)

  • Tape (clear tape works well)

  • Scissors

Teacher Tip: Pre-cut the shapes shapes for younger children, or tell them to bubble cut.

How to Make the Christmas Straw Rockets

Making straw rockets is really quite simple!

  • Print the templates and cut them out.
  • Cut the rectangle straw tube piece and roll it up. Tape together.
  • Tape it to the back of the rocket body — making sure one end of the tube is sealed. (Fold over the top and tape it closed so air can’t escape!)

  • Insert your straw into the launch tube.
  • Ready… Aim… Blow! Watch your paper rockets take flight!

Try launching at different angles and distances for extra fun learning.

The Science Behind It

Straw rockets are not just a craft. They are educational, too! Here is a little bit of science you can teach in the process. When you blow into the straw, the air you exhale becomes force that pushes the reindeer rocket forward. This demonstrates:

  • Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

  • Aerodynamics: How the shape and weight affect flight.

  • Engineering: Kids test, improve, and retest their rocket design.

You can ask:

  • Which rocket travels farther?

  • What happens if you add wings? Antlers?

  • Which angle makes it go the highest?

Turn play into scientific discovery!

STEM Extensions & Challenges

Offer fun variations and different variables, such as:

Challenge What Kids Explore
Longest distance flight Air pressure + aerodynamics
Hit the Christmas target Aim + angle of launch
Santa vs. Reindeer rocket Weight + design changes
Add Rudolf’s nose weight Balance + drag

You can even set up a North Pole flight academy with scorecards.

Educational Benefits of Straw Rockets

  • Strengthens fine motor skills

  • Encourages scientific thinking

  • Engages problem-solving

  • Adds joyful movement to learning

  • Builds holiday memories while still learning!
