Dinner’s Ready! A Thanksgiving Math Card Game for Kids

What would you serve for Thanksgiving dinner if you only had $50 to spend? Would you splurge on the turkey, choose a less expensive main dish, or save a little money for an extra dessert?
In Dinner’s Ready!, kids get to make those decisions while playing a fun Thanksgiving budgeting card game! Players collect food cards, plan their Thanksgiving menus, and try to create a complete holiday dinner without going over budget.
But there’s a catch! A surprise guest might show up, something could burn, or a holiday sale might help stretch their money a little further.
This printable Thanksgiving math game combines money skills, addition, subtraction, budgeting, and strategic thinking into one hands-on activity. It’s a fun way to bring real-world math into your classroom or home during the Thanksgiving season.

A Thanksgiving Math Game That Teaches Budgeting
Budgeting is one of those math skills that makes so much more sense when kids have a reason to use it. Rather than simply adding prices on a worksheet, students have to decide what they can afford and whether a particular purchase is worth the cost.
In this game, each player starts with a $50 Thanksgiving dinner budget and eight food cards.
Their challenge is to create a complete Thanksgiving meal that includes:
- 1 main dish
- 2 side dishes
- 1 vegetable
- 1 dessert
- 1 drink
Players can choose from Thanksgiving favorites like roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potato casserole, pumpkin pie, and apple cider. Every food has a price, and each choice affects the final cost of their meal.
They’ll need to add their food prices, subtract discounts, calculate their remaining money, and decide which cards to keep or exchange.
The goal isn’t necessarily to spend every dollar. In fact, players can earn bonus points for saving money!

How to Play Dinner’s Ready!
The game is designed for 2–4 players and works well for upper elementary students, particularly grades 3–6.
Each player begins with eight food cards, which they keep hidden from the other players. On each turn, players choose whether to draw a new card from the deck or take the top food card from the discard pile.
As they collect cards, they can exchange foods to build a better Thanksgiving menu. Maybe they have two desserts but no vegetables, or they’ve collected all the foods they need but their dinner costs too much.
They’ll have to think carefully about what to keep and what to discard!
Bonus Cards and Challenge Cards
Of course, planning a holiday dinner doesn’t always go exactly as expected.
Throughout the game, players might draw special cards that change their plans.
Bonus Cards offer helpful surprises. A player might find extra money, discover a holiday sale, receive a coupon, or get a free dish from a helpful neighbor. Players can save these cards and use them strategically.
Challenge Cards create unexpected problems that must be handled immediately. Maybe a dish burns, extra guests arrive, or the store runs out of something on the shopping list.
These little twists keep the game interesting and give kids more opportunities to adjust their budgets and solve problems.

Who Wins?
When a player collects all the required foods and stays within budget, they can call out “Dinner’s Ready!”
The other players get one final turn, and then everyone calculates their scores.
Players earn points for filling the required food categories, with a big bonus for completing a meal within budget. Additional points are available for finishing first, including extra foods, and saving money.
Even players who don’t finish their dinners can earn points for the foods they’ve collected. Going over budget results in a point penalty, so students have an incentive to keep track of their spending.
The player with the highest score wins!

What Math Skills Does This Thanksgiving Game Practice?
I love activities that give kids a practical reason to use what they’re learning. Dinner’s Ready! encourages students to work with money in a playful setting where their calculations actually influence their decisions.
Students practice:
- Adding money amounts: Finding the total cost of a Thanksgiving meal.
- Subtracting money: Calculating how much of their budget remains.
- Budgeting: Choosing foods that fit within a spending limit.
- Comparing prices: Deciding whether to keep a more expensive dish or exchange it.
- Calculating discounts: Finding half-price sale amounts and subtracting coupons.
- Problem-solving: Adjusting plans when unexpected expenses or challenges arise.
- Strategic thinking: Balancing the goal of completing a meal with the opportunity to earn more points.
The game also encourages flexible thinking. There isn’t just one correct Thanksgiving menu, and players can take different approaches to building a winning meal.
How to Use This Thanksgiving Math Activity
Dinner’s Ready! is easy to adapt for different learning settings.
Math Centers: Add the cards, instructions, and scoring sheets to a math center for a small group of students. Once children understand the rules, they can play independently.
Thanksgiving Classroom Activities: Use it during Thanksgiving week when you want something seasonal that still reinforces important math skills.

Family Game Night: This is also a fun way to sneak some math practice into a Thanksgiving family gathering!
For younger players, you can simplify the game by leaving out the Surprise Cards or allowing everyone to keep their food cards face up.
Older students can show their calculations and experiment with different combinations to find the highest-scoring meal.
