There is just something about a warm bath at the end of a long day that feels restorative. I have always loved taking long hot baths to relax, think, and unwind a little.
A friend once gave me the most incredible homemade bath bomb, and after using it I immediately wanted to learn how to make my own. I assumed they would be complicated, but I was surprised by how easy they actually are.
This coconut lemon version quickly became one of my favorites because it smells fresh and bright while leaving skin feeling soft and moisturized.
The coconut oil adds richness, while the lemon scent feels uplifting and energizing.
Why You’ll Love These Homemade Bath Bombs
These DIY bath bombs are:
- easy to make
- naturally scented
- moisturizing for skin
- inexpensive compared to store-bought versions
- customizable with different scents and colors
- perfect for gifts, Mother’s Day, teacher gifts, or self-care baskets
They also make a fun project to do with older kids or teens.
What Makes Bath Bombs Fizzy?
The fizzing reaction happens when baking soda and citric acid combine in water.
This creates a simple acid-base chemical reaction that releases carbon dioxide gas, causing the bath bomb to bubble and fizz in the tub.
It’s actually a fun little chemistry lesson hidden inside a relaxing bath product.
Bath Bomb Ingredients:
- 1 c. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
- 1/2 c. Citric acid
- 1/2 c. Cornstarch
- 2 Tbsp Coconut Oil  (Sweet almond oil is another great addition)
- 2 Tbsp Epsom Salt
- 5-6 Tbsp Water
- Lemon Essential Oil (Or your favorite scent)
- Optional natural or soap coloring
How to Make Homemade Bath Bombs
Start by combining the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl:
- baking soda
- citric acid
- cornstarch
- Epsom salt
In a separate small bowl, mix the melted coconut oil, water, and essential oils.
Slowly add the wet ingredients into the dry mixture while stirring continuously. You want the mixture to hold together when squeezed without becoming overly wet.
If the mixture starts fizzing while mixing, too much liquid was added too quickly.
Press Into Molds
Firmly press the mixture into molds.
Silicone molds work especially well because the bath bombs pop out easily once dry. Muffin tins, ice cube trays, or specialty bath bomb molds also work great.
Press the mixture tightly so the bath bombs hold together.
Let Them Dry
Allow the bath bombs to dry for 24–48 hours before removing them from the molds.
Once hardened, store them in:
- glass jars
- airtight containers
- sealed bags
Keeping moisture out helps preserve the fizzing reaction.
Tips for the Best Bath Bombs
A few simple tips help them turn out beautifully:
- add liquid slowly
- press molds firmly
- avoid humid environments while drying
- store airtight
- use high-quality essential oils for stronger scent
Why Coconut Oil Is So Nice in Bath Bombs
Coconut oil helps make these bath bombs feel extra luxurious.
It can help:
- soften skin
- reduce dryness
- leave skin feeling smooth
- add a moisturizing element to the bath
The coconut lemon combination smells fresh, clean, and cheerful without being overpowering.

A Simple DIY Self-Care Project
One of my favorite things about homemade bath bombs is that they feel special without being difficult or expensive to make.
A warm bath, a good book, and a fizzy coconut lemon bath bomb can completely change the mood of a busy day.

Cool idea, I will have to try it, the coconut oil is such a great moisturizer.
Hello,
How many bath bombs does this make roughly. I’m sure the size of the mold is a factor but if I were to use a small size mold would it make 12 or so?
Have you tried to roll into balls without the molds? Thinking of making this for Mothers’ Day.
Thank you for this resource!
If I remember correctly, I made about 9-10 out of this batch with a smaller mold. I used those Ikea silicone molds.
