Financial Literacy for Kids

Financial literacy is something everyone should begin learning at a young age. I have never been great at dealing with money because I didn’t learn it when I was younger. I learned tips for being frugal, but saving and investing was pretty foreign to me. I have done a lot of research and studying as an adult to make sure I am wiser with my finances. Do you teach your kids financial literacy or is that an area where you struggle, too? If you are like me and need ideas to help your kids understand how money works, I have a great book for you and your family. Pirates of Financial Freedom by Joey Fehrman is a fabulous book about finance that kids will really enjoy reading.  What makes this book so great is that it is an adventure novel about pirates that teaches kids how to manage their money.

Are You Teaching Financial Literacy to Your Kids?

While the book is geared more towards older kids, I have been reading Pirates of Financial Freedom to my 9-year-old son and he and I have both really enjoyed it as well as learned a lot from it. My 7-year-old has also been listening in as I read and she told me she is going to start saving her money now! That tells me a lot! As a parent, I am excited to see my kids really getting the lessons in the book. What I love about this book is that it teaches financial literacy the way most homeschool moms want their kids to learn, with a living book.

Pirates of Financial Freedom is a book is about a group of pirates who are broke and need to learn how to save their money. The captain’s son, who left the pirate life to become a financial advisor, comes back to help the crew learn how to get out of debt, save for retirement, invest in the stock market, budget, and more. While all of those topics do not sound fun or exciting, the way the author writes the book, full of pirate treasure hunts, pirate language, exciting fights and kidnappings makes the book enjoyable for kids of all ages.

Finance is such an important life skill that we all need to know and the younger you can help kids understand these concepts, the better off they will be in their lives. The end of the book has a chapter on setting your own goals. It gives ideas of where to start and how to make financial freedom a reality in your lives.
