As we head into the new year, many people are setting goals for the upcoming year.  Most people like to start out the new year with goals and habits to improve themselves. I created a set of printable habit tracking & goal setting worksheets to get you through the whole year one month at at time.

There is something about a new year that makes us all want a fresh start.  Sometimes we stick with these new habits and sometimes we don’t.  I want to share with you some tips and tricks to help you reach these goals and make these new habits a regular part of your life?

Importance of Goal Setting:

I love to constantly work on improving myself. I am always setting goals and working on building habits that make me a better person. There are goals that I have worked hard on and succeeded, but there are some I have not done well with.

I truly believe goal setting is an important part of success and growth.  It increases our motivation and productivity when we have goals to achieve. Goals help us focus on what is important and give us purpose. We all have room for growth and improvement. We are all trying hard to be our best self.  Improving our positive habits is a great way to take control of our own lives.  Even if we do not always succeed, it is a good idea to keep trying and finding new ways to improve ourselves.

So often we hear the joke that people set goals in the new year and within a month they are no longer working on those goals.  We have all had those goals, right?  But I am sure we’ve also all succeeded at certain goals.  What is it that helps us to succeed sometimes and not other times?

What I have learned about goal setting to help me succeed is to set clear goals that have action steps to help you accomplish them. Having an action plan is an important part of the goal setting process.

I read a book many years ago called the 12-Week Year that really helped me with my goal setting.  The main idea of this is to set goals for 12-weeks at a time. With this plan, you can set short-term goals or long-term goals.  With a long term goal, you set small steps and mini-goals for a 12-week period to help you achieve your main goal. If you set achievable goals with a clear plan to help you accomplish them, it makes it more doable!

Two years ago, I set a personal goal to quit sugar.  This was a very difficult goal for me. I started and stopped this goal many times before finally achieving it. Having a daily habit tracking sheet really helped me to achieve this goal.

Other goal-setting tools that really helped me achieve this goal were:

  • Having a support network
  • A clear reason or purpose for why I want to achieve this goal
  • Not quitting and giving up just because I had a bad day or week
  • Putting systems in place to help me when I felt like cheating or quitting
  • Rewards for reaching milestones or benchmarks

I am 2 years sugar free. There have been a few slip-ups or times when I consciously chose to eat something. But I rarely crave it or desire it any longer.  It is possible to achieve those big hard goals!  And there is such a great sense of accomplishment when we do it.  This same process works for all types of goals.

Be sure to think through possible challenges you may have as you try to achieve your goals.  This way you can create a plan of action for overcoming these challenges before they even arise.

I made a set of Downloadable PDF goal worksheets or habit tracking sheets to help you out with your goals and for creating better habits.  These goal sheets are for the entire month or the entire year. The name of each month is written out and divided into the number of days in that month. (There are two Februarys- one with 28 days and one with 29 days for leap years). Each day that you accomplish your goal, you can color in the section for that day.  The yearly habit tracker page has all of the months on one single page.

I love to use colored felt tip pens or fine point makers to color them in with bright colors and patterns.  It makes it fun to color it in each day!

Goal setting & Habit Tracking Worksheets

On each monthly habit tracker worksheet is a place to write your goals for the month. Here you can write specific goals, or action items to help you accomplish one main goal.  Sometimes it is easier to focus on one specific goal at a time rather than trying to set a whole bunch and change your whole routine and self all at once. You can use these to track new habits or to track how long you are going without doing bad habits you are trying to quit.

I love these kind of habit tracking sheets because it is a visual way to see your progress moving in the right direction. You can see evidence of your  hard work day after day. Tracking sheets give me motivation to fill in each and every day.

Another fun thing to do is to award yourself at each of your various milestones. With this goal-setting worksheets, you could award yourself with something special at the end of each month.

What goals are you setting this year?  More physical activity,  More water intake,  Weight loss, quitting an addictive substance (smoking, sugar, caffeine, etc.), increased income goals, reading goals, adding something to your daily routine? Whatever it may be you can keep track of your habits on these free printable habit trackers.   I like to try and set goals in a few areas in my life: physical, mental, spiritual, social, and professional. This helps me improve myself in many areas!  You can use a different goal setting worksheet for each goal or combine them into one.
