Summertime is the favorite time of year around our house. We love to go and do all kinds of fun things together as a family. We love doing active things together like walks, hiking, biking, swimming, and running. I think it is really important to keep kids moving and active all year round. If you get them used to being active while they are kids, it will become a way of life for them. It wlil be easier to keep these healthy habits as adults, too. Last summer I shared a post called 10 Ways to Keep Kids Active this Summer that was full of some ideas to keep kids moving. This summer we got to take part in an adventure that taught my son a lot about his own strength.  Last weekend we had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Kids Adventure Games sponsored by Horizon Organic.

Kids Adventure Games Race - Teach Beside Me

The Adventure Games are and amazing race adventure for kids ages 6-14.

To race, you have to have a teammate that you register with. They divide the kids by age group and have different heats. The kids are given a map and have to navigate their way through the course. Along the course are different activities for them to accomplish and get marked off. They have to finish all of the activities before they run through the finish line. The course is 3 miles long. The different activities were amazing things like rappelling, zip lining, mountain biking, rafting, rock climbing, blow dart shooting, and more. The whole race is done with your teammate.

I registered my son and his cousin together and their team name was the Super Cousins. Neither of them had ever done anything like this before and they were both a little nervous and excited. I’ll be honest, I was pretty nervous for them! My son is a little afraid of heights, so I was worried he would be too afraid to try some of the events. We had a few talk before the day of the race to help prepare him mentally for this adventure. Mostly we discussed being a finisher vs. being a winner. I wanted him to understand that this race was not really about winning, but accomplishing something hard. I wanted him to know that it was alright if they were not the fastest or the best at everything. They were competing to be their own personal best.

Even though this was a really hard thing for these boys to do,they were so brave and did everything~ and LOVED it! After it was over we kept talking about all that they accomplished, and how they felt stronger and braver because of it. It was an amazing experience for these boys. I think it influenced how they thought about themselves. They realized that they can do hard things!

It is so important to teach kids that they can do hard things physically and mentally! Sometimes they might need a little push to help them realize how strong they are.

How are you keeping your kids active this summer?

The Kids Adventure Games were sponsored by Horizon Organic. They gave the kids some yummy treats like Horizon Milk, Cliff ZBars, Horizon Macaroni & Cheese (after the race), and snack crackers.
