Online Math Programs for Homeschool

Math and I have always had a love-hate relationship. I’ve learned to appreciate its logic, but it’s not my favorite subject to teach. My kids are still in the elementary and middle grades, and I’m surviving so far — thanks to some amazing online math programs!

Over the years, we’ve tried nearly everything from free math practice sites to full homeschool curriculums like CTC Math, Teaching Textbooks, and Mr. D’s Math. Below, I’m sharing our family’s favorites and what makes each one unique.

CTC Math

CTC Math is one of our go-to homeschool math programs because it’s straightforward, affordable, and covers K–12. Each lesson includes a short video taught by a real teacher, followed by auto-graded questions.

What We Love:

  • Great for independent learners

  • Lessons are short and to the point

  • Simple parent dashboard for tracking progress

It’s perfect for homeschool families who want solid math instruction without a lot of extra fluff.

Teaching Textbooks

Teaching Textbooks has been a favorite in the homeschool community for years — and for good reason! It’s a complete digital curriculum with built-in grading, video instruction, and a friendly, supportive tone that’s perfect for kids who get easily frustrated with math.

What We Love:

  • Lighthearted voice and encouraging feedback

  • Colorful visuals and audio explanations

  • Self-grading and instant feedback

  • Great for middle and high school

It feels less like “doing math” and more like working with a patient tutor on the computer.

Mr. D’s Math

We’ve used Mr. D’s Math for upper levels, and it’s been a great experience. Mr. D teaches live and self-paced courses for pre-algebra through ACT prep, focusing on conceptual understanding and confidence.

What We Love:

  • Engaging teacher personality

  • Weekly lessons and optional live support

  • Great for teens who benefit from interaction and accountability

  • Excellent test prep courses

If your child struggles with motivation or thrives on connection, Mr. D’s Math bridges that gap beautifully.

Education.com

Thousands of math games, worksheets, and online lessons for grades K–8. It’s an easy add-on to your homeschool day for skill practice or review.

IXL Math

Mastery-based, adaptive platform that tracks detailed progress and fills gaps over time.

Khan Academy

How We Rotate Online Math in Our Homeschool

In our home, I like to combine structure with variety. Each of my kids uses a core math program (like CTC Math or Teaching Textbooks) for their main lessons. Then, once or twice a week, they use a different platform like Prodigy or Education.com just for fun and review.

I set a timer for 20–30 minutes and let them pick the topic — fractions, geometry, decimals, whatever they need practice on. It keeps things lighthearted and helps them stay confident instead of frustrated.

How to Choose the Right Program

The best homeschool math program depends on your child’s personality and learning style:

  • Visual learners may love Teaching Textbooks or DreamBox.

  • Independent learners often thrive with CTC Math.

  • Social or auditory learners may prefer Mr. D’s live classes.

  • Hands-on kids might need a mix of online + manipulatives or printable games.

Try a few free trials before you commit — most of these programs offer one!

No matter what your relationship with math looks like, online programs make it so much easier to teach at home. Whether your child needs structure, independence, or a little extra motivation, there’s a math resource that fits your family perfectly.

  1. Hi Karyn! We met at the Build Your Blog Conference. I love this! What a great site. Have you also heard of Xtra Math? It’s a great online flash card website. When you don’t have time to drill the kids…it’s perfect! Just passing it along. 🙂
