What Are Word Families?

Word families are groups of words that share the same ending sound and spelling pattern.

For example, the –at word family includes:

  • cat

  • bat

  • hat

  • mat

  • sat

When children learn one word in a family, they can often read many others by recognizing the same pattern and combination of letters.

This builds:

  • Reading confidence

  • Phonics skills

  • Pattern recognition and word recognition

  • Spelling ability

  • Early decoding skills

Word families are one of the most effective tools for helping early readers progress quickly.

How to Use the Popcorn Word Families Activity

This activity is simple to set up and use!

Step 1: Print and Prepare

Print the pages on cardstock for durability. Cut out the popcorn buckets and popcorn word pieces.

Optional: laminate the pieces for repeated use.

Step 2: Introduce Word Families

Show your child one bucket, such as the –at family, and read the ending sound together.

Say the sound clearly:

“–at … cat, bat, hat”

This helps them connect similar sound patterns to spelling.

Step 3: Sort the Popcorn Words

Have your child read each popcorn word and place it into the correct bucket. Encourage them to say the word out loud as they sort.

For example:

mat → goes into the –at bucket
pen → goes into the –en bucket

This reinforces phonics skills through repetition and visual grouping.

Step 4: Check and Review Together

Review each bucket and read the words together. This strengthens recognition and builds reading confidence.
