CVC Short I Words Activities

My sweet little kindergartner is learning to read right now. She is doing so great, but it takes so much work and practice every day! We have been focusing a lot on sight words and CVC words this year. In this post, I have a new printable set of CVC words activities, this time with Short I Words. I love it when I can create resources that help my kids with the things they are learning. This is my third set in this series (see short a words & short e words also)

When you are teaching kids to read, it’s best to start with words that can be easily sounded out. CVC words are the perfect words to get started. They are three letter words that can all be easily read by beginning readers.
CVC stands for Consonant, Vowel, Consonant. These three letter words have one syllable and the vowel sound in the center of the word. There are consonants on either side of the vowel.
The Short Vowel Rule:
One-syllable words that have a vowel in the middle, usually have a short vowel sound. Examples include: big, dog, cat. However, if the consonant after the vowel is an f, s, or l, that consonant is usually doubled. Examples include: pass, will, staff.
The short vowels are typically the first sound kids learn when learning the letter sounds. So if they know their letter sounds, they will be able to sound out each of these words easily.
What I love about CVC words are the fact that kids really feel like they are successful at reading because they can sound them all out and even read entire books!
CVC Short I Words Printable Activity Pack
I have created a printable pack for you that includes 28 CVC words with the short i sound. This pack has build the word pages. On these, there is a picture on top with three blank squares underneath to either build the words with letter tiles or write the word in the boxes. We did some of them with letter stamps, too!
The second part of the printable is a set of word puzzles. These are 4-part puzzles with a picture and the three letters to spell the word.
