Short I CVC Words Activities for Beginning Readers

Do you have a beginning reader at home? We’re right in the middle of that stage with my kindergartener, and we’ve been focusing heavily on CVC words and sight word practice. Today I’m excited to share the next printable set in my CVC word series: Short I Words!

What Are CVC Words?
CVC stands for Consonant–Vowel–Consonant — simple, one-syllable three-letter words that are ideal for beginning readers.
Some examples of short i CVC words include: pig, zip, fin, lid, win, tip.
These words are:

Easy to sound out using letter sounds
-
Perfect for building early confidence in reading
-
A great next step after mastering letter recognition and phonemic awareness
Why Start with Short Vowels?
Short vowels are usually the first vowel sounds taught in early reading because they match the most basic phonics patterns.
Kids can sound out and read short vowel CVC words once they know their letter sounds!
The Short Vowel Rule:
One-syllable words with a vowel in the middle usually have a short vowel sound.
For example: big, lid, pig.
When a word ends in f, l, or s, those letters are often doubled (like in will or pass).
