What Are CVC Words?

CVC stands for Consonant-Vowel-Consonant. These simple three-letter words are structured with a consonant, vowel, and consonant, making them easy to sound out for early readers.

Examples of CVC words: cat, dog, pig, sun, net, mop, hat, bug
Examples of CVC nonsense words: mup, jit, fop, rig

Since these words follow a predictable phonetic pattern, they are a great starting point for beginner readers.

What are CVCC words? CVCC words add an extra consonant at the end (e.g., hunt, milk, fast, want), making them slightly more challenging. Once children master CVC words, CVCC words are the next step! There are also CCVC words. I think you can grasp what those are by now!

Short A CVC Words

at family: cat, bat, mat, rat, sat, pat
an family: pan, ran, fan, man, tan
ap family: cap, tap, map, gap, lap, nap, rap
ad family: dad, sad, mad, had, lad, pad
ag family: rag, wag, sag, nag
ab family: dab, lab, cab

Short E CVC Words

Short I CVC Words

Fun Ways to Teach & Practice CVC Words

If you’re looking for engaging ways to help kids master CVC words, try these fun activities:

1. CVC Word Flashcards

Make CVC words on flashcards and have kids sound them out, match them to pictures, or use them in a sentence.

2. Word Building with Letter Tiles

Use magnetic letters or letter tiles to build different CVC words and swap out letters to make new ones. I have sets of these for each of the word families listed below!

3. CVC Word Bingo

Create a simple Bingo board with different CVC words and have kids mark them off as they’re called out.

4. CVC Word Puzzles

Write out a mix of real CVC words and made-up words, then have kids decide which are real and which are nonsense.
