Are you a planner?  Knowing how to plan is a learned skill. I am working on teaching this skill to my kids right now so that they can use it throughout their lives.

How Can You Teach Kids to Be Planners?

Well, we are starting simply.  Get them some of their own supplies. I got them a tiny little planner for school this year. Small is better when they are still younger.  We also got a pack of these FriXion Erasable Pens by Pilot.  My kids love to write in pen, but kids still make lots of mistakes when writing. For some reason, pens feel more special to my kids. (These pens really do erase!  I remember trying erasable pens in the past and they didn’t really erase.)

I am teaching them how to use their planners and what things are important to add into it. Show them all of the different parts of the planner and teach them the benefits of using them.  I am also having them write important school things in their planner so they can learn to keep track of what they need to do and when it needs to be finished. I am helping them fill in their calendar so they don’t feel too much stress about it.

Once the calendars in their planners are filled in, it is important to help them create a habit of using it regularly. If you use a planner, you can be an example of using it.  Remind them to pull it out each day and check their calendar or add in new things they need to remember to do.

Why Should You Teach Kids to Be Planners?

Kids are busy these days!  Planning is not just for adults.  It is so great for a child to be able to see what activities and assignments are coming up in their lives.   While parents need to keep track of activities, kids need to learn this responsibility as well.

Teaching kids to be planners gives them valuable organization skills that they can use their whole lives.  They will feel confident about their school and work assignments. They will feel organized and on top of things that come their way. The earlier they learn to plan and make it a habit, the better off they will be. It will become a part of their lives.

Pilot is partnering with STOMP Out Bullying.  With any purchase of Pilot’s FriXion Clicker erasable gel ink pens, you can help Pilot support & fund STOMP Out Bullying programs to ‘erase’ negative bullying behaviors and ‘rewrite’ positive, productive solutions.

  1. My son just began preschool two days a week, and I want to make sure I really maximize the time I have to myself. I seriously need to get organized! I may have to pick up a small planner and some FriXion pens to do just that! #client
