Fun Facts About the State of Arkansas:
Before diving into your printables, here are some fun and educational facts about Arkansas:
- Arkansas became the 25th U.S. state on June 15, 1836.
- It’s known as “The Natural State” because of its stunning parks, mountains, and rivers.
- The capital and largest city is Little Rock.
- Arkansas is home to the only active diamond mine in the United States—Crater of Diamonds State Park.
- The Ozark and Ouachita Mountains run through the state.
- The state bird is the Northern Mockingbird, and the state flower is the Apple Blossom.
- The name “Arkansas” comes from a French interpretation of a Sioux word meaning “downriver people.”
- It borders six states: Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma.
- Famous Arkansans include former President Bill Clinton and author Maya Angelou.

Arkansas Crystal STEM Connection
Arkansas is famous for its quartz crystals and is home to the only public diamond mine in the United States. Visitors can even search for their own gemstones at Crater of Diamonds State Park.
Kids can learn about crystal formation with our Rock Candy Geodes or Rock Candy Crystals activities, which demonstrates how crystals grow from a saturated solution.
