Place Value Snake

This week I made a little learning activity with my kids to help them practice their place values in math. My daughter has been learning place value in her first grade math lately and I thought this idea might help her understand the concept a little more. We made a snake place value counter from an egg carton.

To make the Place Value Snake, We used a cardboard egg carton. We needed it to be 8 spaces long, so I cut of two pieces and attached them to the end. Then I cut off one more piece to make into the head at the front. I let my kids paint and decorate it to make it into a snake.

To put it together, you can staple or tape the extra pieces together to the long piece. My stapler had trouble getting around both layers, so I ended up taping it with packing tape.  Add a face and a little tongue to make it more snake-like.

I wrote the place values along the side of the egg carton with a sharpie marker.  Then I gave the kids some beads to add into each section (no mare than 9 in each one).

Take it to another level and write out the numbers that they create. See if they know how to say those big numbers!
