Alphabet Play Dough Mats: Build, Trace & Learn the ABCs

Learning letters is so much more fun when kids can build them, squish them, trace them, and play with them! These printable alphabet play dough mats give preschool and kindergarten learners a hands-on way to practice all 26 letters of the alphabet.
Each mat includes uppercase and lowercase letters to build with play dough, handwriting practice, and a beginning-sound picture kids can create, too.
They’re a simple way to combine letter recognition, beginning sounds, handwriting, and fine motor practice into one playful alphabet activity.
And because there is one mat for every letter from A to Z, you can pull them out one at a time as you introduce new letters or use the whole set for alphabet review.
Learning Letters with Play Dough
I love using play dough for early learning because little hands are working the entire time.
Rolling, pinching, pressing, and shaping play dough helps strengthen fine motor skills, the hand and finger muscles children will eventually use for handwriting. At the same time, kids are seeing and forming the shapes of the letters instead of simply looking at them on a worksheet.
That makes these alphabet mats a fun multisensory way to practice the ABCs.
How to Use the Alphabet Play Dough Mats
Each letter mat includes three different ways to practice.
1. Build the Letters
Kids can roll play dough into long ropes and use them to form the large uppercase and lowercase letters on the page.
Talk about the letter while they build it.
Does it have straight lines? Curved lines? Both?
For letters with several different strokes, children can make each section separately and put them together like a puzzle.
2. Build the Beginning-Sound Picture
Every mat also includes a simple picture beginning with that letter to help them learn the letter sounds.
For example:
A is for apple.
B is for ball.
D is for dog.
N is for nest.
R is for rabbit.
Children can use play dough to build or decorate the picture while saying the word and listening for its beginning sound.
This adds an early phonics component to the activity rather than focusing only on letter shapes.
3. Trace the Letter
At the bottom of each mat, children can trace both the uppercase and lowercase letter.
Use a pencil, crayon, or dry-erase marker if you’ve laminated the pages.
Now you’ve practiced the same letter three ways:
Build it. Make it. Trace it!
Make Your Play Dough Mats Reusable
I recommend printing the mats on cardstock and either laminating them or slipping them into reusable dry-erase pockets.
Then kids can build with play dough directly on top of the mat and practice tracing the letters again and again.
When they’re finished, wipe the mat clean and save it for another day.
You can also put the complete alphabet set into a binder or storage bin and pull out whichever letters you’re currently working on.
