Groundhog Day might be a little silly, but that’s part of the fun! It’s also a perfect excuse to sneak in a little math. This simple Groundhog Day Probability Game helps kids explore chance and outcomes in a hands-on way while celebrating the holiday.

It’s quick to prep, uses just a few basic supplies, and works great for classrooms, homeschool, or a last-minute seasonal activity.

What You’ll Need

  • Printed game board (download below)

  • One game piece for each of two players
(Buttons, beads, coins, or pieces from another game work great!)

  • A coin to flip

Game Setup

Both players start in the center of the board on the sun.

How to Play

Players take turns flipping a coin.

  • Heads → Move one space toward Spring

  • Tails → Move one space toward Winter

The first player to reach either side wins!

The Math Behind the Game

This activity is a fun way to introduce probability in a way kids can easily understand. Each coin flip has two possible outcomes with an equal chance — just like the classic Groundhog Day question:

Will the groundhog see his shadow or not?

Kids get to experience how random chance works while cheering for spring (or winter!).
