Groundhog Day Unit Study

Groundhog Day is one of those quirky traditions that sticks—part weather lore, part cultural fun, and a perfect opportunity for learning.

Every February 2nd, all eyes turn to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where a famous groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil predicts whether we’ll have six more weeks of winter or an early spring. But how did this tradition begin? And what’s the science—or the silliness—behind it?

If you’re looking for a fun way to explore the history and symbolism of Groundhog Day, I’ve created a printable Groundhog Day Unit Study to help kids dig a little deeper (pun intended).

What Is Groundhog Day, Anyway?

Groundhog Day started in the late 1800s and has roots in ancient Candlemas traditions brought to the U.S. by German immigrants. Originally, hedgehogs were used to “predict” the weather. In Pennsylvania, groundhogs became the stand-in.

Here’s the folklore:

  • Cloudy day = No shadow = Early spring

  • Sunny day = Sees shadow = Six more weeks of winter

Each year, Phil emerges from his burrow and gives his “forecast.” It’s all in fun, but it’s also a great springboard for cross-curricular learning.
