Teaching the Letter D: Sounds and Recognition Tips

Letter D makes the /d/ sound—like in dog, dinosaur, duck, and drum. It’s a soft, percussive sound that kids love to repeat. You can play a fun listening game and ask them to jump up every time they hear a word that starts with the /d/ sound.

Use finger tracing, air writing, or salt trays to practice the curved back and straight line that make up the letter D.

Make a Letter D discovery basket with small toys or items around the house that begin with D—like a doll, dish, dice, or duck.

Hands-On Letter D Activity Ideas

Make learning letter D engaging with some of these simple ideas:

  • Dig for Dinos – Hide plastic dinosaurs in a sensory bin of kinetic sand or rice
  • Drum & Dance – Grab pots and wooden spoons and drum to the beat while saying D words
  • Dot the D – Use dot markers, stickers, or small stamps to fill in a big D outline
  • Drive on a D – Use tape to make a large letter D on the floor and let toy cars drive along the path
  • Make a D Collage – Use magazine cutouts of things that start with D and glue onto a poster
  • Doodle with Dough – Roll playdough snakes and shape them into the letter D

Fine Motor Activities for Letter D

Fine motor practice can be both purposeful and fun! Here are a few ways to build those small muscles while reinforcing the letter D:

  • Use cotton swabs and paint to dot the letter D
  • Glue small objects like dry beans or dots of paper to trace the shape of the letter
  • Cut out the Dolphin craft and glue it onto a watercolor background
  • Use tongs to sort D-shaped pasta or dry cereal into bowls
  • String beads onto a pipe cleaner shaped into the letter D

Preschool Letter D Craft: D is for Dolphin

We made a sweet Dolphin D craft, and it turned out so cheerful! The D template and dolphin illustration are included in the printable pack. We used watercolors to paint both pieces, then cut them out and glued them onto a background with waves and sunshine.

Other fun letter D crafts you could try:

  • D is for Duck (use feathers!)
  • D is for Drum (turn a paper cup into a mini drum)
  • D is for Dots (decorate with dot stickers or fingerprints)

Preschool Letter D Snack: D is for Dog

This one was such a hit with my kids! Here’s how we made our D is for Dog snack:

  • Head: Rice cake
  • Ears: Graham crackers
  • Cheeks: Nilla wafers
  • Eyes: Blueberries
  • Tongue: Half a grape

We used a little peanut butter to make the pieces stick, but you could also use honey or yogurt. You can let your child assemble it on their own (hello, fine motor fun) or surprise them with a puppy snack to go along with your dog-themed books!
